Unfortunately, even though the truck is only 2 1/2 years old, I'm in the military and have moved twice in that time period and I have 44,000 miles on the truck. Ford is telling me that it's outside of the warranty and pretty much to pack sand. I'm getting to the point that I will never buy another Ford again and will steer all my soldiers away from buying a Ford as well.
No fix that I have seen.

The only "fix" is not using your rear defrost. Ford won't acknowledge that this is a problem.

Mine was fixed by Ford... but I'm still in the factory warranty otherwise I'm positive I would have paid.

Has anyone else filed a complaint with the NHTSA?

Sure enough, the rear passenger side panel of my 2011 FX4 is shattered. It's still in the frame so I took some pictures and am going to the dealer tomorrow for service anyway so I will show them then.

It was raining, the windows and mirrors were a bit foggy so I had turned the rear defroster on for a few minutes beforehand. Temp was about 12C.

The whole glass just looks shattered. You MIGHT say it's slightly spidered from where the heater wire contacts the glass. There is also oil leaking from that spot outside onto the cab body.
Well add me to the list. 2010 Lariat SCREW. Driving down the highway. It was rainy and damp. Sounded like a rock hit the roof. Once I got home I noticed the shattered right rear panel with the shorted trim on the outside.

42K miles. Out of the factory warranty, but have the Ford ESP warranty.

I'm gonna be angry if I'm going to have to file a claim with my insurance company for something that is a Ford defect.

Well Ford and the dealer stepped up.

Dropped off the truck this morning. The dealer acknowledged that it's a known issue. They were going to have to send in pictures to Ford and see what happens.

Dealer calls and says that it's not covered under the Premium Care Extended warranty, but they filed a claim with Ford for consideration. He wasn't sure when they would get a verdict so I should come pick up the vehicle. Ten minutes later he calls me back and said that he had good news. They were going to cover the repair and all I had to pay was the $100 deductible. They were going to try and get the glass ordered and there was even a possibility I could get it back tonight or tomorrow at the latest.

Kudos to Ford.

Pictures of the damage. You can see on the trim picture where it heated up/shorted out and the glass cracks expand away from there.

I'm glad that you got some resolution. I went through all the channels and even though it's a known problem, I was told I still had to pay for it myself.

They just lost a customer over 700 dollars. Wife is due for a new vehicle and I just crossed the Ford Fusion right off the list.

Hey all,
Dont post here often but figured i would add my experience with this. Last night around 8 i used my remote started to warm up the truck before going to get my pizza. I usually back up to my door when i park so when i walked out i instantly noticed my back window was glowing orange in the corner and by the time i reached the driver door to shut off the defroster my friend that was with me saw flames and jumped into the bed to put some snow on it. Luckily it did go out on its own. But besides the OP it seems I'm one of the few that actually watched the whole thing from the outside. Heres a few pictures where you can see the melted plastic and scorch marks. I just had my truck into the dealer on Wednesday, Thursday i noticed my defrost was not working correctly (wish i read this thread before) because Friday this happened. Hopefully i can get the dealer or Ford to do something. Seems hit or miss from the luck of other people on this thread. At least i have a $0 deductible on my glass insurance...

Afternoon update:

Called my dealer, she said she has heard of it and they have had more than 5 customers have this problem, and will all the previous ones the customers just went through insurance. I told her I didnt want to do that so she gave me Ford corporate's number (800) 392 3673, follow the prompts to speak with an agent.

So after speaking with a Ford corporate agent, she said that Ford does know about the issue and it was corrected in 2013 and that the glass replacement companies have updated glass (I hope she was right about that). She gave me a ford claim number and indicated that there is a number of these claims. I told Ford that mine was on fire, which it was, and for some reason that elevated it to a more important issue. So i ended up with a claim number and she told me to give this to my insurance company and my insurance company with seek repayment from Ford (idk if thats true but at this point i said whatever i need a new window)

Then i call my insurance company and the auto glass place and i'll be getting it replaced monday.

I'd like to see Ford do something about this issue instead of the insurance companies paying for it. My dealer was extremely helpful and generous but said they couldnt do anymore than tell me to contact Ford directly.
