If it were me and it was dead (which mine did under warranty luckily) but my mirrors still worked, I wouldn't bother. I'm in New England and I hardly ever need the rear defroster..
The Windshield on my Dakota came off driving home from the Dealership, it went downhill from there! On the bright side, after three years and 100+ visits to the dealer, they had all of the issues fixed just in time to turn in the lease. (Windshield falling off, missing insulation in the floor, AC compressor failing (3x), Exhaust leaks, water pump failure, paint peeling, transmission stopped working, tailgate not latching, bed rattling, radiator leaking, door alignment, loud whistle due to a missing air intake baffle)

Compared to that, My F150 issues are minor (Rear window defroster stopped working, running board rusting, transmission loud shifting, differential leaking, AC smelling bad)

Default Rear defroster

This seems like a common issue. My 2014 F150’s rear defroster never seemed to work correctly from the day I drove it off the lot. Constant “playing” with the rear window would make it work for a while. In October of 2016, I took it to the dealer and their solution was that my rear window was not closed completely. I explained to the service manager that I had opened and closed it several times and the defroster would not work. After an exceptionally mild winter last winter there wasn’t much need for the rear defroster. Last week, we had a cold snap. I got in my truck, tried to turn the rear defroster on and it wouldn’t work. I told it to the dealer and they told me the rear window needed to be replaced to the tune of $900+. The truck has 28k mikes on it, but the 36 months was up in August. I complained to the service manager at the dealership and they DO have a record of my previous complaint, but only knocked 50% off my cost. I’ve since filed a complaint with Ford Motor Company because the issue was pretty much ignored when I complained while under warranty. It seems that this issue may be a common problem with the design. I’ve been buying fords for 30 years and this is the first time I’ve had an issue with a repair. Hopefully, Ford will make it right. I guess my advice is if you are having problems with this issue, maybe get a second opinion. My fault was not checking the device unless I needed to use it. Only to find it wasn’t operating when I did need it.

I had the same issue and debated whether it was worth having my rear slider replaced and chancing it leaking afterwards or even a few marks from the swap, for something I use twice, if at all.
Fortunately they did a perfect job. It was only 2 year's old, and they didn't hesitate replacing it. The slider is a slower than the original and seems to struggle even after I've greased as much as I can, but 2 years later and at 42,000 miles it still works.
Hope Ford does the right thing for you.

masitile, I did have it replaced. The dealer charged me $400 for the replacement instead of the $900+ originally stated. I knew that going in. I did, however, file a complaint with Ford Motor Company about the pre-existing condition of the rear defroster and the fact that I have a documented visit to the dealer for that specific issue while the vehicle was still under warranty. I have yet to hear from Ford, but will keep you posted. I too noticed that the sliding mechanism works much slower than the previous window. I'm now wondering if this is a known or common issue with the old sliders. hmmmmm.

I had mine replaced under warranty as the rear defrost no longer worked. I also noticed the new one is slower. It also looks like it kinda tilts a lil when it starts to open.

Did any of you notice the difference in tint? I swear my new one has less tint than the old one, in addition to the slower window

I guess $400 is a hell of a lot better. It's the raising hell at the dealer, that people want you to do, is a lot easier said, than it is to do.
Maybe just persistent calls, might get results. Who knows.

Everyone is experiencing a slower slider.. that's interesting..
I feel like I'm about to place a bet when I hit that button, if the motor is finally burnt out or not..

Tagle; that's exactly what my replacement does. It doesn't slide straight. The bottom kicks out first and sounds like the motor is working hard.
I've tried a couple things with top groove to no avail.

I feel like grease and felt aren't a good mix, so I'm nervous to put too much grease or anything really, in that groove.

I also don't want to play too many games and stop it from defrosting those couple times.

I can't say for sure. It looks the same, but maybe I'll look at old and new pictures, to see if I can notice.
