About a week and a half ago I purchased a 2010 FX4 Super Crew that had right at 14,000 miles on it. I have noticed the rear end making a clunking noise when stopping/braking or coming to a rolling stop (without touching the brake) - downshifting from 2nd to 1st. Yesterday afternoon, I dropped the truck off at the service department at the dealer where I bought it and they looked at it and called me yesterday afternoon to tell me that it was ready - they drove it, heard/felt the noise and reprogrammed/recalibrated the transmission and that it was not making the noise "as bad" and that the truck just has to learn how I drive (whatever!). I pick it up, and while it has not done it as often, it still does it. I have searched this forum and have read about the slip yoke problems and I am assuming this is what is probably wrong with my truck. My questions are:

1) What/where is a slip yoke and what does it do?
2) If not fixed, what potential (worse) problems could occur down the road.

I was not expecting this from a newer vehicle and from what I have read on here, it just seems like a lot of the service departments "mask" this kind of problem with a quick fix (like what they did to mine yesterday).

I bought this truck wanting to put a 2 inch leveling kit and tires on it, but now I am terrified to do that because I can't afford for the warranty to be voided.

Any suggestions, anyone?!?!

I have heard of the clunk on many trucks especially 4X4's. Most of the time it's caused by the rear drive shaft splines being dry and in need of grease. If you have a one peace drive shaft it will need grease where the drive shaft splines go inside the transfer case or if you have a two piece shaft you may also have to grease the middle splines as well. You will need to remove the bolts that connect the shaft to the rear axle and pull the drive shaft out of the transfer case.

Can't say for sure but it doesn't cost much for grease.

My dad just got a 2011 svt raptor with the same problem. He took it into the dealership and they said it was part of the drive shaft that hadn't been lubricated well enough in the factory. But the dealership fixed it and so far it has been fine.

Is there any zerk's fittings on the Ford driveshafts? My old 4runner did and it was easy to grease with a grease gun.

i hope its just your driveshaft. cause my old chevy( number one reason right there) would clunk horribly when i turned or downshifted due to my locker snappign and rear end grenading. i would wish this on noone as i know how much of a pain in the *** it is to do

Had the same "clunk" around 25 mph as I slowed. I also have the 2 piece driveshaft. Dealer lubed it and put on 2 clamps. Quiet now, but I hear it may not last long.

I am scared that they are going to just mask the problem. We will see. It has almost ruined my dream of lifting it and putting bigger tires on it-I definitely can't afford for the warranty to be voided. Thanks everyone- I will let y'all know what they do (or try to tell me).

I have the same truck and I also worked for a Ford dealer. I still have friends that work there and have had my truck brought in for the same concern. It is because in the 2010 model they do not have a one way clutch in the trans and that is what you are feeling, they can poss program the trans with the latest update but it will never totally go away cause of that design. Hope that will help you a little. I know it is very frustrating I am dealing with the same problem.

What about putting a leveling kit on it? Will it make the trans problem worse and void the warranty?
