Default HTO-06 Motor Oil Spec.

Just bought a new Ecoboost........my question is with turbo's does anyone have an opinon about using a motor oil thats HTO-06 rated.....which is a spec that Honda recommends for the Acura RDX turbo engine....as far as I can find Mobil 1 and Pennzoil are the only ones that have this rating.

It is a rating I look for. Kendall GT-1 Full Syn has the spec also. IIRC it is not on the sheet because final approval from Honda is delayed due to the tsunami taking out the testing lab.

It's not officially required by Ford (obviously), but there is a reason Honda turbo specs call for that.

Personally, I run Mobil 1 (0w30 winter, 5w30 summer) which carry the HTO turbo spec. It's cheap when you buy the 5qt jugs.

Thanks guys......anyone who owns an Ecoboost should use an oil that meets the HTO-6 Honda rating.....after looking in my shop......I found what I was looking for..........QS Ultimate Syn. 5W-30 meets the Honda spec's......so I guess I'll continue to use QS Ultimate Syn.

LOL at anyone with an EcoBoost should use a Honda rated oil. I'm sure that's exactly what Ford used when they were doing their testing of the engine. Heck fire, maybe I should have been running Motorcraft oil in my old Civic the whole time.

You totally missed the point of this post...............the HTO-6 rating means that any oil that meets the Honda spec's is a VERY VERY high quality oil that is made for turbo engines.......for extra protection..........most oils don't rate high enough to meet that standard..........not even Motorcraft.

Well TBH I am sure that Motorcraft does not submit their oil to Honda for testing. So we really do not know if MC oil meets the spec or not. In addition CP, the maker of Motorcraft oil, has 2 brands that do meet the spec and one of those is rumored to be the basis for MC oil.

IIRC HTO-06 is mostly about deposit formation on extremely hot turbos. While it is not a Ford spec, I personally think it is a nice addition to oils that already meet Ford requirements.

Oil Specification for Turbocharged Engines
Honda/Acura HTO-06
Main feature is a modified hot-tube test. Purpose:
• Evaluate the deposit-forming tendency of an oil after aging. (Testing an oil in fresh condition only is not useful.)
• The aging procedure simulates additive consumption and sludge/soot build-up.
1. Moisture & NOx Bubbling
2. Sludge/Soot Simulation
3. Hot Tube
• Procedure is available to lubricant and additive companies upon request.
• This procedure does not discriminate against high-moly oils. (High-moly oils are not a problem for Honda turbocharger technology.)
• This test correlates well with Honda turbocharger testing (bench and real-world).

Good info beercan.............your right the extra protection is what we all need with a turbo engine.......
If MC does have a HTO-6 rated oil.......they need to step forward and let the public know........some guys think its just a Honda thing.....its a turbo thing............all engines with turbo's need the best oil they can buy.

Ford will never admit that they meet a Honda spec. It would be a PR nightmare for Ford and a boon for Honda
