price on used 2010 Platinum
While looking for a new F-150 and I came across two used 2010 Platinums. I am having trouble figuring out what to pay for them. KBB and NADA do not have the 2010 Platinum listed. They are both 4x4, have the NAV system and are similarly equipped (except as I explain below).
The first one has about 7,500 miles on it. It was not yet priced because they just got it in (it was in the back). I was told the price was $43,900 but they agreed to sale it for $38,500.
The second one I found was at a dealership that was closed. It has about 14,000 miles on it. This one had a price on the window of $38,500. It also has bedliner, rollback bedcover, and the side steps, but no tailgate step.
The second one has double the miles but still plenty of factory warranty. The starting price of the second one is the same as what I ‘negotiated’ on the first. However, I was not ready to buy and did not try negotiating very hard. I just asked for numbers.
The new ones have an MSRP around $50,000 with an invoice about $45,000. I think there is $3500 in rebates (and another $1k is you finance with ford). Assuming they would sale at invoice, I could get a new one for about $40,500-41,500.
Are the invoice deals still around?

At the numbers I mentioned, I also think it would be best to get the new one.
Getting the truck at invoice is a pretty big discount (about $10k). The second used truck has an ASKING price of $38,500. I have not tried to negotiate. If I could get it for around $33,000, it may be worth it. However, I do not know if that number is realistic. And, I would hate to get it, and then hear that many people are getting the same for $28k.

Trucks hold their value well and if you find one with low milage I would say a fair price for the Platinum would be to look up a new one's invoice then minus available rebates and then minus 3-5k from that depending on mileage and condition. I would think that would lead to expecting to pay upper mid to high 30K range, probably like 37000 would be a fair number. But if your anything like me, if I could pick up a brand new one for only $50 bucks or so more a month I'm going that route so it's a tough call if you don't get a steal.

If you figure a stick of $50K on a new one with $10K in discounts and rebates you're at $40K new. As others have said, trucks hold their value and the dealer is counting on someone coming in to buy that always buys used vehicles and therefore doesn't shop new and figure out that they can buy new for $40K. Lots of people see the $50,000 sticker on a new truck, see the $38,500 sticker on the used and think they're getting a steal and plunk down their dollars. You're smarter than that and know for an extra couple thousand you can get a new one. That's what I would do.
