FedEx del'vd my Pioneer TS-SW2002D2 this afternoon and its a nice looking sub - especially for the $$. Even so, not so sure I'll complete the install now that I have the box out and OEM speaker removed (wires not yet cut). I'm not thrilled losing the OEM plastic perforated plastic grille which protects the cone and seems not easily transferable to the Pioneer (which simply provides a 6-screw mounting trim ring w/o same level of protection). Unsure by weight and size that Pioneer's 600W max / 150W nominal unit is functionally superior to the Ford/Sony sub rated 700W? Also noting the lower profile Pioneer is noticeably lighter compared to the larger magnet on the OEM speaker and that my sub is the later version w/o integrated amplifier "in the box". Comments welcomed...

First of all, the ENTIRE Sony system is rated at 700w. Not the sub itself.

Secondly, it's just a more efficient magnet. Weight doesn't mean anything in speaker design.

Thirdly, the speaker faces down with barely any clearance from the carpet. What exactly do you think is going to damage the sub in that small space?

Interesting comments:
1) Hadn't considered that the OEM sub isn't rated 700W max. Its marked "60W + 60W" so possibly that implies 120W nominal vs 150W nominal for the topic Pioneer?
2) Weight of magnet "implies" more power but I do realize design is more of a factor than size of alnico magnet.
3) Good point also on unlikely damage to cone once in mounting brackets. I'd still prefer protection of the OEM but then maybe that perf pattern tends to block effective decibel level output too.

Lastly, also noticed Pioneer incorporates what looks like a bass reflex port mid-center on the back of the magnet housing. Being a shallower speaker than OEM, possibly more opportunity for bass response "punch"?

The hole in the middle of the pioneer is for cooling nothing to do with sound.

Magnet size and weight means nothing. Go check out a speaker with neodymium magnets, way smaller but more efficient.

The pioneer sub is superior to stock in every way, now if the stock box and amp will allow you to notice the difference in relation to the $70 or so you spend on the sub is another thing entirely. Ever heard the saying band-aid on a bullet hole.

Update: completed the simple install and it seems a further improvement over OEM + polyfil. I cut/tinned the leads and used all 8 OEM screws w/o the Pioneer trim ring (which is slightly too large diameter to fit the sub box recess in any case). This is an easily reversible mod if in the unlikely case I ever choose to...

I also installed the Pioneer sub tonight and I'd say it was worth the $75. There is a noticeable improvement!
