I got the 5.4 engine. Its hard to explain. I think its the iwe becouse i did a search and people were experiencing the same sounds, just havent seen anything about the issue on the newer generation trucks. All ive seen was for the 2004-2008's. If it does it again im going to turn the 4x4 on like the guys suggested above.

Sounds like your explaining exact same noise I had. 2010 f150, 4x4. After diagnosing my self, found a hole in the vacuum line running to the HUB on the drivers side. Used a vacuum pump/brake tester to test vacuum in all lines for the IWE system. If I remember correctly, the lines have to be able to maintain a 5 lb vacuum in order to keep HUBs from engaging.

If you here the noise turn on 4x4. If it stops then probably was a front axle turning without the transfe case. Which means the hub was engaged in 2wd so that is most likely bad iwe or vaccuum line going to it. Or you can just jack up front end with truck in 2wd and try to turn front wheels by hand and see if the front axles turn. They should not

Yeah. Just dont drive it aeound like thatforever. The system can handle that. Its just not meant to be turning on dry roads a lot. Over time that will cause damage. Or like I said jyst jack it up and try that. Unless you know how to check vacuum pressure. That will tell you too. There is a whole thread on iwe troubleshooting. I believe it is a stickie

@mudder800 I think I currently have the same problem. I just installed a 2" level about 500 miles ago & it's made this noise a couple different times... It made that noise this morning so I engaged the 4x4 at 45mph & the noise stopped, it continued to not make that noise after dropping back into 2-wheel. Can I pretty much narrow it down to an IWE? Also, how long can I drive like this?
