The price difference between the FX4 and the Platinum, at the time I was purchasing was $1,000. That's why I began this thread, since it was my first F150 and I did not know the (or if there was an) "off-roading" different between a Plat and FX4.

I don't really care why other people might want the Platinum versus the FX4, I was only concerned whether the Plat would serve my needs.

I got an off-road package (KR) and really don't do any off roading but nice to have if I do go to a state park or dirt path road. This is why dealers love the higher end F150's, give the buyer alittle bling and rake in the cash profits...

I see lots of lifted trucks and I always wonder why. Coming from the Jeep line I really didn't know a whole lot about the F150. My truck is filthy most of the time, but hey, for $1,000 more I upgraded from the FX4 to the Platinum! Stupid to turn that deal down.

I never understood people with a truck that were afraid to scratch it, but I also never understood the need for the people who do to make fun of people who don't.

my point was ford offered the plat, because they were catering to the bling society, those people don't go off road,, the escalade, ranger rover, Lincoln crowd..they use the truck for highway/city use and a weekend trip to lowes that's why they don't offer the off-road on that package. Doesn't mean that everyone that buys a plat wants the same thing, there nice trucks, use them how ever you want, off or on road..

And if you buy a truck for the "offroad" package then you got duped! Some thin *** skids that don't work well, some "revalved" shocks that look identical to the stock ones?

Bilsteins add a way better ride and do benefit offroad.

I would love a platinum mainly for the boards!

I stuck with the FX4 for the rubber floor mats.

Apart from the tailgate decoration, the Platinum is quite understated. The front appears softened quite a bit, not overly chromed, and the grill is a brushed appearance. The running boards tuck away nicely, the wheels just look nice. To me, it is the "estate car" of the truck world in terms of comfort. I live in horse $$$ country and it doesn't look out of place parked next to Range Rovers and the like, yet when you need it to tow a 25' trailer to the campsite, it is more than capable.

No doubt, the off-road package is a fluff at best. I got it. the metal skid plates seem fine, they cover the main parts, if you bottom out off road nothing under there is gonna protect you, there mainly to keep some mud and rocks from clanging around,,the shocks, there not bilsteins but no means but tuned for dirt paths, the hill decent feature could be the best feature to the off road package,, Oh, don't forget the cool sticker that says Off-Road,,thats a $500 upgrade right there. They should reclassify the off-road to the dirt path package. But the platinum with the retractable steps and chrome/silver look was merely to cater to the yuppy crowd. doesn't mean everyone who buys them doesn't use them like any other truck,, just like the KR is catered to the cow poke community. I don't farm but love the KR leather and look. Just to be different and not dime a dozen on the road..i haven't seen one that looks like mine in my area all year. Whatever model someone chooses, it rarely stays stock,, guys love to mod to make there trucks unique and different from the crowd.

This forum helped me with the decision process when I was getting the F150 and since it was my first truck my questions likely seemed odd, especially for my needs (i.e. most people do not go off road except as someone said, at the Starbucks parking lot).

But what's so strange (and sometimes funny to read) with the F150 truck is how many people feel one way or the other, some put off, some offended, some arrogant and others angry over a silly model designation: FX4 versus Platinum, Lariat, KR; chrome versus shocks, etc... The parts in the Platinum are the same as the FX4 and the other models, except maybe the crappy plastic covering is a different color or laminated differently. The Platinum model is NOT a luxury vehicle, it just has some just some upgraded parts; however, some of the comments in this thread and other threads would lead you to believe otherwise.

For me, the difference between the Platinum and the FX4 was about $3-$5 a month in my car payment!

And on that note, thanks again to everyone who helped me with my decisions, happy holidays (whatever you celebrate), Happy New Year, and to all those who think Platinum owners are the upper echelon, just remember everyone poops and dies the same lonely way.
