Default Opinions on the 2009-2010 5.4L Engine

The 5.4L was used in most F150s since the late 90s and was altered throughout its years in existence to fix its inherent problems. 2009 and 2010 was its last years of production and was the final product of all of the revisions made. Was the 2009-2010 the perfect 5.4L produced? What is your opinion of this engine?

The 5.4 was used in the expedition had the 5.4 until the end of 2014. But I don't know if it got any changes from the 2010 f150. But I have had 2 f150's with the 5.4 and love them.

Supposedly had a lot of issues with cam phaser / timing chain tensioner / variable cam timing. The issue may be way overblown, but I test drove a 2010 with 50k miles and another with 72k miles. The 50k mile rig spark knocked under load (something was up with the variable timing I guess) and sounded like a diesel at idle if you mashed the throttle and held the brake in gear. The 72k mile rig also had the spark knock sound. Some have had great luck with them, but those two test drives were enough to turn me off of a 3 valve 5.4. The older 5.4's (2 valves per cylinder) were nearly indestructible. I assume the 3 valve would be also if you were lucky and didn't have any problems with the variable cam timing components.

My dad's 2001 5.4 (2 valve) is still going strong. My brother in law's 2010 5.4 (3 valve), something went wrong with the engine (he ignored a check engine light and he did mention something about cam phasers). The engine was replaced under warranty and traded for a 2013 Silverado, then that traded for a 2014 F150.
