Default Weight class registration in pa

My gvwr is 7350 I think for my 2012 screw 5.0 6.5 ft 3.73
I just got my registration in the mail and the dealer registered as class 2 which is up to 7000 and is about 86 bucks a year. Class 3 is 150 a year.

Kinda annoys me the dealer didn't ask me which class I wanted and assumed I wanted to save 70 a year. Not the case. I want my gvwr as High as possible.

So my truck is gvwr 7350 but my registration is only good up to 7000

350 doesn't seem like much but when towing that 350 is huge on a tongue weight reading.

I don't tow heavy often or far. Maybe 4 or 5 times a year.

Am I looking too much into this?

I tow a dump trailer with a gvwr at 10001 and a have a 7000 lb gooseneck livestock trailer. I also borrow a friends equipment trailer to haul our skid steer ( nit sure on weight, probably close to 9000 loaded).

You'll likely be fine, if it was a work vehicle with a name down the side you could have issues. I'm just south of Pittsburgh and class 2. I had a tump grinder stop by this summer and we got to talking about towing, he had a 250. He said certain townships set up day time check points. WHAT? I never heard of it or seen it. I have heard of certain townships - MT Lebanon for one that just like to bust nuts, but I've never had any issues with this truck or my last one and I've had them both overloaded.

I'd bet the only time anyone would notice is if your dragging real bad and holding up traffic or you wipeout. In either of those cases the extra class prob wouldn't help.

It is all about the money. When I bought my new Ford F150 Limited at a dealer in North Hills Pittsburgh the girl ask me if I wanted the Class 2 or the Class 3.

She told me I could 7,000# on Class 2 for $80 a year and 8,400# for $150 a year.

My trucks has a GCWR of 7,200# but if I paid more I could haul more.

Really???

I don't know how they can just change the weight just by me paying more!

I am in Saxonburg, Pa.

Mine is registered as a class 3. I don't fully understand all of this crap but figure I'm covered for whatever I decide to haul.

I'm near Allentown Pa.

You cannot legally exceed the lessor of your gvwr or the class. So in your case you can go 7200 as class 3 or 7000 as class 2. I don't know if such small weight is worth $80 a year. But if you got weighed it would be!

Has anyone ever been stopped and weighed if the backend of their truck wasn't dragging on the ground?

Probably not. There is always the liability thing if something bad happened.

Nope. except a friend's work truck hauling a water buffalo. I had a bit more than 2K in the bed this summer, had a brain fart and told the guy 1 ton instead of half. The girl at the scale wasn't happy and said you weren't here. before that I had 15 or 1600 lbs of pavers and crept along without issue.

A few yrs ago a bit north of Pittsburgh a trailer disconnected, crossed the road and cut a van in half. Couple kids died and maybe the dad, can't recall. After that happened I remember a lot of stories of people getting pulled just for safety checks, but it's died down.

Likely most cops are going to give a break unless you got a business name on the side or you're just acting like an idiot calling a lot of attention to yourself.

I'm in Bethel Park, 15 miles or so south of Pittsburgh.
