Default Buying 2013 FX4 - Need some quick help

Hello All - first thread posted, i am a new member.

I am picking up a new 2013 FX4 in the next few weeks or so, and i have a few concerns; mainly on what engine to pick.

Can i get some votes here on which way to go; 5.0L V8 or 3.5L Eco-Boost V6... I am torn between the two, as we have a number of 5.0L V8's and seem to be solid, reliable and decently fuel conservative engines.

I am hesitant to go with the V6 as 1) the V8 should be a longer lasting enginer (Historically) and i am weary of having twin turbos not be as realiable long term (breaking down over time 5+years)

I hear the eco-boost is a quiet engine, with tons of power, but i am nervous to go that way with 1) the turbo issues that Ford has had in the past, and that its still relatively new technology. and they are basically pushing more torque and horsepower out of a smaller block.

I really appreciate your input; as i want to make the right decision here.

THis truck will be expected in our fleet for 5+ years, likely 10. Construction.

Default Vote for EcoBoost....

..I have a 2013 FX4 with the EcoBoost engine...and just over 6000 miles on it.

My use is as a daily driver...plus some long distance trips.

Engine is smooth, powerful and gets great mileage...particularly on the highway.

I've seen as high as 21.....and regularly get 18-19.

Remember, everything, including turbos is covered under the powertrain warranty.

Good luck with your choice.

Good thing there isn't 355 threads on this already
i like the quietness of the EB as my truck will primarly be used for hwy trips with my wife. I felt the 5.0 has slightly less get-up-and-go at low rpms, so another good point for the EB.
Gas mileage is more dependent on the driver / conditions than the engine, so that's not really a factor. Longevity of both engines has been beaten to death here, other than the turbos (which would be cheap to replace from what people in the know have said), the blocks are not all that different.
the 5.0 is as much of a new engine as the EB.

Welcome to the forum! Lots of posts on this issue/choice as written above.

FWIW, I went with the 5.0 as I was wary of the TT too. Many people love them and have no problems with them, but some people are having problems with them - but a small minority.

I had 2012 ecoboost fx4 that turned to crap on me. Missing and shuttering and power lose. Seen alot of others had the same issues. I am not sure if it changed it 2013. When it did run it ran good. Gas mileage was not there like expected got about 18 on highway. My 2013 5.0 gets 17. A little less responsive truck than the ecoboost.

You're in construction, you probably work around diesels all the time, but you weary of the turbos on the EB not holding up.......anyways, there's no right answer to your question. 5.0 owners will beat their drums all day long, as will the EB owners. Both are new engines, the 5.0 is just a familiar size, but the comparisons to the old 5.0 stop there.

You can't go wrong with either one. Just make sure you have a good warranty. If your destiny is to get a lemon, you will get one no matter what. lol

Turbos are nothing to worry about. Diesels have been using them for decades. Do you hear diesel people worrying about their turbos? Your buy should be influenced by how you will use the truck; not by worrying about turbos. If you like "gunning" it and don't tow much of anything; 5.0. If you drive reasonable and tow a fair load; EB.

For me it basically came down to what I liked on the lot. The truck I wanted happened to have the 5.0. I prefer the sound of the 5.0 and I think the ECO is like 1100 +/- extra so it's a win for me. If my truck happened to have the ECO badge on the side it wouldn't have been a deterrent it would still be in the driveway.

I have an Ecoboost and live in an area with lots of hills. The gas mileage isn't what they claim it to be when you're driving in an area with lots of hills. I love my truck and it has a lot of pick up when you press the gas pedal. Just yesterday some jackass kept speeding up and would't let me merge onto the interstate so I floored the pedal and cut him off. I haven't had any engine issues at all. I've owned it since July 16th and it has about 5800 miles on it now. I did have some issues with the paint that were finally taken care of and they gave me the extended 75k mile warranty for free.
