Default OEM Backup camera confusion

Have seen the OEM backup camera kits for sale on eBay etc. I have a 2011 XLT with sync in the headliner. It appears in the threads that the mirror with the kit has sync in it? Also there are a few plugs that some trucks come wired with and others are missing them? Some have bought the kit and the headliner plug assembly from Tasca and were all set. Is there a summary of what few things you need to check for before buying anything to ensure you have what you need? I have searched several threads and they seem to have varying answers. Thanks and apologies for the potentially dumb questions.

not sure if this is bad form or not, but i was surfing the web yesterday and found this thread.

http://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/10...f-150-xlt.html

if you look at the bottom of the first page there are pictures of the plug by the back bumper and spare tire. i have a 2011 FX4, I checked and mine has the wires for the camera, so i ordered my kit from nailsandsales on eBay. it should be here wednesday and i will update as to how the install goes. i'm hoping it is plug and play...

Buying the correct parts is this simple:

1) Google "ebay seller search" and click the first link

2) Type in "nailsandsales" without quotes and search

3) Click on nailsandsales (under "Items for Sale")

4) Click "Contact Seller" under the avatar

5) Send him/her a note mentioning that you'd like a camera/bezel/harness/mirror for a 2011 F-150.

The 2011 mirror I just bought from them is (in theory) the correct one - auto dim/no Sync mic. We'll see in a few days...

Price was $325 shipped for the whole meal deal.

Does the camera have to go to the mirror? My truck has navigation. If you have nav does the backup camera go to the head unit? Or does it always have to go to the mirror?

t_b i have the exact same set-up on it's way from nails. Like you, we'll see if it's all the right stuff. The other forum has a very long thread working on all this and the one here is on-going as it seems some folks have had issues with the plugs etc. Apparently the 11's don't suffer some of the same pitfalls. I will be curious how you progress.

I don't believe that it HAS to be in the mirror. My understanding is that the guys with the NAV units and camera, have the image on their NAV screen. Whether you can add the camera piece afterwards to work with the NAV unit I'm afraid I don't know. I would imagine you could though.

Here are the parts I used on my 2011:

Mirror (inside with RVD) BU5A-17E678-CD
Camera (Tailgate) harness AL3Z-14A411C
Bezel (Camera) AL3Z19H511A
Rear Camera AL3Z19G490A
Name Plate (Ford Logo) 9L3Z-1542528-A
Screw & Washer Asy. N805949-S439
Insert (For above screw) W714711-S439

I got my mirror and connector on eBay, also purchased a 5 pin round weather-pack connector and crimping tool on eBay. I used the weather-pack in place of the ford connector below the tailgate because my truck didn't have the wiring to the display and I ran my own (2 wire 18 AWG twisted pair cable purchased from Altex Computer and Electronics) http://www.altex.com/ The other 3 connections on the 5 pin plug were, shield drain, power and ground. Because I ran my own wire and omitted the computer connection I don't have the ability to zoom the camera image or the option to turn the guide lines off, but those two items don't make a different to me. Hope that helps. If you need more specific wiring info let me know. I still have the wiring diagrams and connector pin locations from my project.

I'll be installing an aftermarket nav system shortly with a video in connection. I currently have the oem camera and mirror display. I'd like to have the rearview display in the new nav screen. Can anyone point me towards a wiring diagram that will help me?
