Novice trying to understand gear ratios for ecoboost F-150

Boost :)
I've got a FX2 w/ 3.55's and the factory 20" wheels and tires and can easily get 17 in the city and almost 22 on the highway and do it very consistently. I've got almost 8k on the truck and have no problems doing 21.0 or better at 73-74mph on the highway.

I currently have the 2011 SCrew XLT 4x4 with the 3.55LSD, I do not know WHEN my truck is suppose to start getting 20mpg but I wish it would hurry it up, lol. It really doesn't matter much but just an FYI I am getting at BEST 17.5mpg highway with my truck bone stock. I have about 900 miles on it though so I am hoping this will improve, I baby the throttle as much as possible and usually maintain 1500-1700 RPMs on the highway which is where I do most of my driving. From what I have seen the 20+mpg some guys are getting is more the exception than the rule, then again my truck isn't quite "broke in" yet, my brother(he is a mechanic) says it will get progressively better and should level out after my first 5k mile oil change....YMMV
Also FWIW I would NOT go any smaller than a 3.55 rear end for the 10% of the time you may need it and if you plan on doing more daily driving and less mudding/rock crawling I would consider the LSD over the Elocker if you go with the 3.73. I had a Nissan Frontier NISMO with the E-Locker set up similar to the FX4 and NEVER used it(the truck weighed over 5k lbs so noone go throwing the "Small truck" stuff around, lol) I frequent the Pisgah and Nantahala National forests off road vehicle areas often during camping season... The F150 has yet to see this use, but it shall come spring!
Also, center consoles are for women and dainty handed metro sexuals, get a jump seat like a real man should, the shifter belongs ON THE COLUMN!!!....

Best bet is 3.55LS. Great mileage in all applications you'll use it in. I purchased a ecoboost XLT SCrew 4x4 with sticker price @ 41,XXX; paid 32,XXX. The discount was multiple rebates and no sales tax is charged.

Alright it looks like the 3.55LS is what I need/want after reading everyone's post. I'll keep the 32" stock tires and probably go with 20" rims. I'm holding off a few more days since the 2012s will be coming in. Though not much change that larger gas tank for 700+mi per fill up.
Now if I could just the dealership to drop its price. They seem pretty smug about their pricing and not willing to move. The we're willing to knock 3k off a month ago and on the same truck now willing to do 6k now that the '12 are hitting the lot. My understanding for the invoice price it is ~41k and sticker is 47k.
How is everyone's 4x4 handling in the winter? I'm assuming it will drive just fine in 12" of new snow like my Explorer does.

I haven't seen one of these!
I'm assuming this is rear wheel and not 4x4. Ohio has a lot of flat terrain that transition into rolling hills near where I'm commuting to. If I can get 20mpg highway I'll be a happy camper. In the winter they average 6' of snow and I need a good vehicle to handle this.
I test drove a 4x4 3.55 platinum the other day and it was ticking at 16.5mpg on the highway at 70mph. That's where my dilemma came in. I know that the instant can be off on mileage, but it really made me take a step back.
I'm sure these trucks are all tuned for best MPG but is there anything that could be bought to help?
