You have to always have the phone ready to go with Bluetooth on before you turn on the ignition. If you don't connection is unlikely to work properly.
Same thing happens if you walk far enough away and lose BT connection.
A phone reboot and truck restart is needed to make all right again.

If you're still using the Galaxy SII, this is what worked to activate texting in my 2012 F150:
Have the vehicle running and the phone paired. In SYNC go to Phone, Settings, Advanced.
Scroll down to MAP Profile On/Off and turn it "On". Scroll back up to Txt Msg Notification and turn it "On".
Have someone send you a text msg.
On your phone you will get a screen that says something like, 'SYNC is requesting a text message through Bluetooth". Make sure the "Always Allow" box is checked and hit OK on your phone.
I can now receive (read on screen or have SYNC read it to me) text messages and reply using the canned messages on SYNC. I can type in and send texts using my phone.

Will the galaxy s3 work with th texting with the sync? I have a iPhone 4 now and just bought my truck last week and haven't had time to mess with my iPhone with the sync yet. I want the galaxy s3 as my next phone but want to make sure it will work with all the features with the sync

Galaxy S2 with Ice Cream Sandwich
My Galaxy S2 does not have the Skyrocket but the Ice Cream Sandwich operating system and I cannot get text message notification or do anything with texting via bluetooth with the SYNC in my 2012 FX4. I know the Galaxy S2 the runs Skyrocket works with this. It is compatible however with all the other SYNC functions (streaming music via bluetooth, etc). If anyone has a fix for me please post!

My Elenore,
Same phone and truck. As others have written, ensure your BT is ON before turning the ignition on your vehicle. Otherwise, argue with SYNC until you get what you want ... ie
Me: sync phone
Truck: bong
Me: phone
Me: PHONE
Me: PHONE YOU ##mi^&*#@(!!!!!
Truck: no phone is available right now, I will try to connect one
Truck: Sync has connected to your phone and is reminding you that 911 assist is set to off
Me: Call Mom
Truck: Call Bob, at work, or at home ?
Me: Call Mom
Truck: Multiple numbers exist (me now pushing buttons) BONG, vehicle health report
Me: Call Mom
Truck: Calling your boss; ring, ring, "Hello Mr. Executive Vice P..."
Me: (*&(*&^ ( hang up on boss )
Me: Call Mom
Me: No (*(&*#$(**^@#!!!!, PHONE CALL MOM!!!
People in car beside mine roll up windows and lock doors
Finally: Ring, Hey, how you doing ....
Really ... just spend some time learning SYNC's vocabulary. What's really funny is that our 2 year old has figured it out and when she hears the "bong" she yells SYNC BLUETOOTH AUDIO DISNEY.
All the buttons work to skip ahead and back, go back to the beginning of song ... works great with a little time in the manual to learn to speak SYNC.

This worked for me and a few other folks, you might try it again. One of the other folks was using Ice Cream Sandwich ... good luck
