Retired and loving it!
My only advice, is to buy an early production 2014 at the year end clearance when they heavily liquidate inventory. They will knock 10K off the sticker prices for the upper echelon models. I wouldn't buy a late production 2014 because of the pressure to get the 2015 tooling done could mean lack of proper QC in production.
Ford kept producing the 2014 in Kansas while converting the Dearborn line, then once 2014 production shut down in mid September, they officially started 2015 production in Dearborn while converting Kansas City's line to the 2015.

The discussion helps me since I have not owned a truck before and all of the different towing numbers, axle numbers, payload numbers, lock or non locking axle has all been a little over whelming. When I started looking, all I thought I wanted was a crew cab 4x4. I thought the hardest part was going to be deciding on the color. Nope,

With the weights you are speaking of, and even if you move up to the 6000 lbs either engine with the standard gearing will serve you well. Now, you can go back to picking the color. I found that to be the hardest thing for me also. Good luck.
Remember, darker colors show the dirt more, lighter colors don't. And most importantly, if momma ain't happy nobodies happy.

INMHO, the 5.0L is the way to go. I really like the "seat of the pants" feel of power waitiing to be used in normal driving & the feel of that power released when I occasionally go to WOT pass. I don't tow often, but when I hook up my trailer w/tractor (9000 gross), the truck hardly knows it. I tow that from 4300 ft to 7300 ft altitude on 4-6% grades using Tow/Haul & OD --- I rarely have to intercede. And, I don't have to wait in the "slow" lane when I want pass slow moving traffic. And, engine & trans temps stay in the safe range. We drove across Nevada and Utah maintaining 80-85 mph (wife driving). I don't pay much attention to MPG, but we avg'd slightly over 20 for the entire trip (Albuquerque NM to Salem OR & return. Best was 24+ across Nevada. Me driving.

Towing a 6-7% grade pulling 9k and your getting 20 mpg average towing with a 5.0. That's a nice thought (dream), cause my Boost doesn't get close to that. Maybe if I consider unhook in the trailer and then calculating mileage...yeah that's got to be it! Or your towing downhill all the way?

Well, I deserve the jokes! That was not well written by me. As you might have figured out those were multiple "events" over a period of time lumped together.

To the OP. I have friends with both EB and 5.0 we all get the same fuel economy except for the ones that drive like they are 16. Both are good engines. If you are towing and already talking about buying a bigger camper get a truck with 3.73s instead of the 3.55s. If I remember correctly I am sure I will be corrected if I am wrong a 2000lb difference in what it is rated for towing.

Hold out a couple years and I'm sure you'll be able to get the 2.0 ecoboost that's in my wife's escape, and truck trend will drive it and say it feels just as powerful as the 3.5! (aka 2.7 lol)!!
