No doubt an amp would help the higher quality speakers sound even better, but for those of us just looking for a nice improvement over the factory speakers for a budget price, a simple upgrade won't disappoint!
I used four Infinity speakers:
Amazon.com : Infinity Reference 6832cf 6 x 8/5 x 7-Inch, 180-Watt High Performance 2-Way Loudspeaker (Pair) : Vehicle Speakers : Car Electronics Amazon.com : Infinity Reference 6832cf 6 x 8/5 x 7-Inch, 180-Watt High Performance 2-Way Loudspeaker (Pair) : Vehicle Speakers : Car Electronics
I'm very happy with the sound improvement in my '13 XLT Crew. Now I can understand what folks are saying about the sound quality dropoff with Serius over FM stations. I couldn't hear it before.

just installed my front kappas and they sound amazing! Hey fellas when you go to put the doors back on pull the round rod guide out of the top of the panel and this will make it so much easier going back on. Gives you a large easy hole for the rod, then reinstall the guide!

$300+ for direct replacement? That is a whole new level of waste. You should really think about things before posting. Now, if you're going to put a good amp with those speakers, and more than likely replace the head unit, then yes that would be a good suggestion. But that isn't what the OP was asking for.

I second the focal k2p. That's what I have currently. You get what you pay for. These are amazing speakers, even for direct replacement to start off with. Even the entry level focal are excellent speakers. I'm just assuming irub1out has not experienced these great speakers. They do sound even better with a bit ten processor and an amp but depends on your budget.

I think OP doesn't plan on doing very much beyond direct replacements so the Focals, although great, would be a huge investment for little return running off the stock 7 watts per channel.

Ic. Fair enough. I just always tell people to invest in a good set of speakers to begin with in the case you do want louder and want to add an amp in the future. Some sound deadening also goes a long way and is fairly cheap and easy to install on the inside of the door skin. My focals have been in a few rides now and I look at them as more of an investment, then just a throw away, sell with the truck speaker.

I've never heard them, you're right.

But that's not what I'm saying - what I'm saying is that I'm SURE they're good. Focal has been at the top of that industry for a long time and I have no doubt that these are worth every penny.

What I disagree with is using them as stock replacement with no intention of replacing the HU or adding an amp - that's a CRAZY waste of potential. Not to mention I think that at only 7w per channel it may actually damage the speakers since that audio signal will degrade.

That's all. If its paired with a HU and amp, that's a sweet setup - if not, there's far better options out there budget wise.

I replaced the headunit with a Kenwood touchscreen DDX, Kenwood Excelon 6*8s in all four doors, and a Kenwood 1,400 watt shallow 12" sub in a custom sealed box under the rear seat powered by a 1,400 watt Kenwood mono amp.

It sounds absolutely amazing at any volume all the way up through max volume (35).

You really can't get any better sound in your truck. Everyone who's heard it loves it. Even buds with high end JBL and Alpine systems have given it the nod as sounding better.

While there are louder systems out there, mines all about sound quality.

The stock speakers are like playing sound through mud. Replacing the stock speakers makes a big difference, but you'll see even a bigger difference by replacing the headunit, if you have already replaced the speakers. The stock headunit is only 7 ways rms per channel. 10 max.

If you replace the headunit and leave the stock speakers, you'll also see an improvement, but not as much over replacing the speaker first.

A good Kenwood or Alpine headunit pushes 45 watts max and 22 rms. Enough to make your aftermarket speakers bump.

If you go with a Sony or Pioneer headunit, you'll need a 4 channel amp to really get decent sound because they tend to be around 25 watts max, and 15 watts rms. Better than stock, but will distort out when the volumes pushed up.

If you are really wanting good sound, replacing the sub is necessary. 30% of your music is in the bass sound range. No matter what you do, a 6*8 door speaker just isn't going to reproduce much bass, and it's going to distort at higher volumes. Simple matter of physics due to low excursion distance of the speaker and small surface area.

If you are on a budget, and can only replace one component at a time, I'd recommend this order:

1. Speakers
2. Headunit
3. Sub
