here is an update.

my truck is still in the shop.

The head tech that they have on it seems to be a nice fellow and has been really decent when we have talked. I know engines so I can understand the high points of what he is finding. So far, he has Ford hotline involved and is doing things as they request and reporting back to them.

it does not seem to be in the bottom of the engine. The last time I talked to him, they were looking at the variable valve timing as a possible reason for the noise. It has been there for a week. I miss my truck.

The dealership only had a car for me as a loaner and I would not accept that, so I spoke with a manager and they got me a truck to drive, so aside from not having my tool box to work out of, I have what I need to do my job.

I wished I had more to report and I will post back when I have more info.

Crystal, what kind of help are you offering exactly? Are you saying you can get involved if we feel our dealer isn't taking care of us on this issue?

thanks

Mine has a similar knock at idle (after warmed up) and at take off (could be doing in all gears but it's hard to hear with the road noise at cruising speed). It developed around 21,000 miles and has done it ever since (now at 39K mi). I've had it at multiple dealerships and they all say the same thing - "VCT's (variable cam timing solenoids) / Cam phaser". Not fixable - "nature of the beast". Comforting news isn't? Hope they find a fix for you. I will follow this thread and the others that discuss this topic hoping they find a fix before my powertrain warranty runs out.

just to be clear, what is the powertrain warranty on the F150? Isn't it 5/60 ?

also, if you have a documented issue prior to the end of the warranty, that causes a failure after the warranty, shouldn't that be enough for Ford to do the right thing?

Hi vmax,

I can look into options to assist once your vehicle has been diagnosed by a Ford Dealership. If that's the case for you, send me a PM with your information and I'll see what I can do. Be sure to include your full name, best daytime phone number, VIN, mileage, and servicing dealership.

My truck is currently in the shop for this rattle issue. dealer called earlier and said they could not find an issue with it so tomorrow I need to go up there and take someone for a drive. Also has a nasty knock they say is normal. To go along with my paint peeling bu the tail light for the second time in six months it needs to go in and be re painted. I have has nothing but problems with my 2013 5.0. I only have 30k on it and would love to dump the dam thing. The alignment was out of soec from the factory and it ruined my tires. They fixed the alignement and said they would work something out to replace them a couple months ago. I called and called the service manager with no luck or call or email back. When I finally caught him today on the phone, he tells me oh well if we could have done something we would have. Lol wow what great service. So that was with 7500 miles on the truck and have been nursing my tires along ruined.. think the dealership or ford would step up, nope I pay 35k for a truck with alignment out of spec and have to replace the tires myself. what a joke.. I have owned three other f150's but really doubt I will ever again after this mess. Every time I have taken my truck in I have had a list of issues they cannot fix. Like the third brake light leaking. They said they fixed it six months ago when I bought the truck, its leaked ever since and now they tell me ford says its normal and its not a sealed light so will do this. Haha wow. sorry for the rant. I'm a little upset of the quality vehicle I received when I thought I was buying a new dependable truck. One thing after another and the service manager will not do much of anything. Now I have no truck for another 3-4 weeks while they re paint it for a second time, same spot, same issue. Wonder why they couldn't even fix that the first time. Guess its time to look else where for another dealer or brand as much as I hate to say it.

PS this is how it usually goes

once you get FED a line well maybe we can assist by calling the dealer and saying stop feeding this guy a line a say NFF. Can't hear it, not an issue. Reps on here are as pointless as a trap door on a lifeboat. Deal with your own issues and if your in the US lemon law it as soon as your tired of dealing with Ford. Oh how I wish we had this in Canada.

It's kind of too late for them to say its not a problem as they are "tearing into" it. The only info I have gotten is after I contacted the service writer. I left the dealership last Thursday with the loaner truck and hadn't heard a word from anyone so yesterday I texted the service writer and all she said was that "hotline" was having the tech "tear into it" after "hotline" had him do all of these external test first. She was supposed to have him give more updates and let me know, but that never happened.

The lack of updating when a guys truck is in the shop for days and days is unacceptable. You'd figure that a call or text every couple of days even to just say, "we are still working it", but all I get is crickets...

UPDATE

today I went back into the shop to look at what was going on and to get some tools from my tool box.

before the tech got over there, I saw a lower half of one of the main bearings on the work bench, along with the oil pan and my Mobil 1 oil filter that had been cut away to expose the filter element.

The bearing actually looked ok but there was some visible metal in the oil pan and he showed me one bigger piece in the filter. I asked him if it was ferrous or non-ferrous metal and he said he has found both suggesting steel and aluminum are present. I had been thinking that I wished I had saved a sample of my drain oil from the last change, but at this point there is no reason to if you can see metal particles then those are way above 40 micron. The biggest one I saw I would estimate to be over 100 micron

The next thing Ford is having them do is take off the valve covers and do some inspections trying to look at some of the VTC components.

We discussed my use of Mobil 1 and Mobil 1 filter and my driving habits, which are 90 percent highway and very little idle time and he seemed fine with all of that.

He said he hoped that they would have a root cause identified by mid to late next week and then Ford would tell them how to proceed. He talked about the possibility of short block or long block repair. I personally don't like those options. I think metal in the oil at 19k, Ford needs to send them a crate engine and take care of me, after all it is my truck not theirs.

I just don't have that warm fuzzy feeling right now.

Good to catch that Man here in Canada they wouldn't let us near our trucks in the shop and would be worse off than you are. At least you have an Idea based on your own observation, otherwise they would have FED you a different line.
