My truck is in the shop for an engine knock
2013, 5.0 - 20,000miles
I took it in for a couple of small issues yesterday one of which was a light knock, or rattle coming from under the cab, engine area.
I noticed it while driving around slowly up a hill at my ranch with the
windows down, slight hill, light load rpm, I heard it up and down with the rpm. No noise at idle, nothing going down the road at speed.
I honestly thought it was a bracket or something loose with the exhaust
I listened with the mechanic as the service writer held the brake in drive at about 800 rpm and you could hear it with your head placed above the front tire on both sides
They have had it for a day and a half and can't find the source and are thinking it could be internal. I'm pretty shocked, I thought these things were bullet proof on things like this.
They tossed me the keys to a Fusion
I told them ok for now, but if they do engine work, they'd better find me a truck to drive.

My trucks going in for the same thing on the 20th. Does it in all gears under slight load or giving it a little gas. Also have a slight knock. Let me know what you find out. I did some searches and found many things on this forums and other places online. Sounds like its a pretty common issue. Looks like ford says its normal from what I found. I will not be happy if they tell me that.

Sounds exactly like the knock I have. To reproduce: Put truck in drive. Foot on brake. Give it slight gas so the RPM's rise to about 800rpm. Listen to thump thump thump noise coming from behind engine. Give it more RPM and hear the noise get faster. It only does it in drive. Do the same thing in neutral, doesn't do it.
I think it's something to do with the torque convertor. It also does it in ANY gear (using select shift), and reverse.
I'm not to worried about it. Please keep us in the loop as to what they find.

I took it in and told the service manager extactly what to do to get the noise. When I tried to pick the truck up, the notes said they drove it and found no noise.
Thats when I switched service writers because I don't think he listened to what I was telling him
They brought my truck around so I could show the mechanic the noise myself. I let it warm up a few minutes and pulled it inside the service lane because the steet noise was too high.
but it didn't start being noticable until it warmed up a bit first

Not sure that out issue could be related but mine did have a bit of noise and almost same milage. turned out to be a bad valve from factory that caused head damage and several other issues. Took dealer 2wks to locate and fix. Might look into that.
