Looking for advice on what to buy

It can be quite exhausting searching for a vehicle. Especially when your in a small town without a lot of options. Of course you could have a good reason for a road trip if you find one you like in a far off land.

Also realize owners have pride (sometimes too much) in their engine choice. The ecoboost is a better towing engine all around and you would find it more relaxing than the 5.0 which would need to shift down far more often. Nothing wrong with that, it's just busier. Unloaded the ecoboost will yield 2 mpg better on average. Maybe it's important to you, maybe not. For as much as you may have heard about the ecoboost, there are also stories of the 5.0 using lots of oil, knocking and blowing engines. But just like the ecoboost, the 5.0 grenadine is rare. So pick which engine is in your budget ( the 5.0 is cheaper, but less powerful) and which fits your needs. You really can't go wrong with either.
Or stick with the older but proven 5.4. Whatever you choose it'll be light years ahead of your 4.6.

Right now I'm feeling quite upset over the bait and switch thing they pulled. I just chatted in the chat box with Ford asking if the vehicle we had been promised to see was still there for sale (it's still on their website for sale) and the woman said yes. I'm not used to being jerked around like that and feel sickish over it.
Is this done a lot?

Unfortunately it's done quite a bit. The more you search, the better you will be able to ferret out these type adds. And, you can always come here for help when you have concerns. You have to be careful with advertised sale prices also. Dealers will apply every incentive/offer to the sticker price to make it look like a great deal. And when you arrive at the lot to look, you'll find out you are not eligible for all the posted discounts. Sleazy, very sleazy, but they will do anything to get you into the showroom as you have already found out.
And, I still stand by the 5.0L engine. I have two, one at 16,000 miles, and one at 11,000 miles with zero problems. Don't fret about any of the engines. When you find a truck you like, ask the dealer to look up the service records. It's right there in their computer. You will be able to see if the engine has had any serious problems.

I have seen supercrew 4x4 5.0's for as low as $27K brand new. I have a supercrew 4x4 with a 6.5' bed and a canopy. I have added a leveling kit, 34" tires and a tuner. I average anywhere from 14.8 to 15.6 around town. On the highway unloaded I average around 21 mpg. towed a small boat with some camping gear in the back 650 miles and got 19mpg. I don't think you can go wrong with any of the newer engines.

Martha, those prices include discounts for a trade, and for financing. You can qualify for the $1000 "Ford Finance Cash" if you finance at least $6700 (that's the amount in my state). However, the loan can be paid in full at any time. I used this discount, and paid the loan off quickly to defer all those interest fees. The "Additional Dealer Trade Discount" is extra cash they add to the quoted price of your trade-in if you have one, if not you won't get that discount as you see the line that says "Price with qualified trade. The other discounts are standard discounts that you should qualify for.
You can go to www.ford.com, and under the heading "Shopping Tools". In the drop down look for "incentive/offers", and click. You can fill in you zip code, and see the discounts available for your area. This would be where you see the numbers listed in the "Ford Rebate" line above.
