Alright guys, I think I could use a little help. I have 2 2005 f150's, one purchased new, the other used. I'm a heavy duty diesel mechanic that works on tractors and trailers, VERY limited knowledge of light duty trucks.

My wife's F150's yellow wrench popped up the other day on the way to work. I learned from the owners manual (and this site, thank you very much), that thats limp home mode. She said driving 10 MPH down the shoulder of the highway was no fun. She turned the truck off and on, and the light did not come back for the rest of the ride home. However, the light was NOT accompanied by any normal check engine light.

I call the snap-on guy at work, and asked him if he had a code reader on his truck. He said he'd drop it off where I work later today. My question is, if the truck goes into limp home mode without the standard check engine light, will the ecu still have a stored code so I have something to go by?

But then again, if there was no normal check engine light, does that mean that maybe it is a sensor that is not engine related? Like perhaps a trans neutral switch? Its an auto trans and I don't know anything about autos... Do they even have a neutral switch? hahaha

PS, we rented a car for a couple of days just in case.

There should be a code. I'm guessing it's going to be the TPS. The code you will get will be TPS stuck open or TPS stuck closed. 2104(limp home) 2111(TPS stuck open) would be the codes.

Ok, pulled 2 codes out. The numbers are the same you mentioned, but the defintions are slightly different. P2104 TAC system forced idle P2111 TAC system stuck open. Is there a difference between the TPS and TAC? Now i'm wondering what would be the fix. A new TPS sensor? Or maybe a throttle body? Thanks again!

the problem is in the tp sensors they offer replacement tp's or a throttle body replacement is also available this concern is not uncommon for the f150 if you are replacing the tp it's best to remove the t/b because the locktight used on the tp bolts is sometimes a BI*** to get loose without stripping the screw heads.. clear your code and you'll be ready to roll.. your concern will not throw a service engine soon light...

Replace the TPS and clean the crap out of the throttle body. It is a little intricate but you will notice a world of difference. Also you should pick up some MAF cleaner and clean that puppy up while your in there. There is no reason to replace the throttle body when you can clean it and make it good as new.

Thanks for all the help guys. Just ordererd a new TPS sensor at advanced auto. I'll pick up some of that cleaner when I go to pick up the sensor. $65.99 sensor at advanced auto. Makes me wonder how much the dealer would charge. The air cleaner isn't to bad, but I figured what the heck and got another one of them too. If anybody is curious, here are the part numbers for that sensor.

My 2007 f150 is stuck on limp mode. I've changed the cam sensor and tps. I also cleaned the throttle body. Also, multiple codes come up after changing the tps. What should I do now?

Mine did this, was just a loose wire in the back of the TPS.

I'll double check that. The cam shaft sensor codes are coming back now.
