Default Exhaust Tips

I see a lot of fancy looking exhaust tips out there, such as many of the RBP ones. Do they change the sound of exhaust any or just for mere appearance?

Exhaust tips are for Looks only & just completes and gives a finished look to your system.

effect on sound is negligible based on what I've seen over the years... The muffler and size of the tubing have more to do with it than the tips....partly because the temp and pressure is some much lower by the time it gets to the back of the truck...

This is debatable. I have a 5" tip dumped and tucked over the axle and it definitely has a different tone from the stock exit and tip.

You are comparing your exhaust by "dumping it", or ending, over your axle... versus the stock side exit behind the rear tire.
I would highly assume that yours WOULD have a different tone because you shortened it/modified it and comparing it to what WAS stock.
I believe the OP is asking: "just by adding a tip, (wherever the exhaust ends)....will it change the sound"?

Just adding a tip won't affect the sound at all unless it has some kind of baffle or insert that interferes with the flow. Otherwise, purely aesthetic. I do wish they came with a tip from the factory instead of just a rough pipe sticking out the back.

Yeah guys, I'm gathering that's it just as I thought...for looks only and no real change in sound. Gotta switch out to a performance exhaust for that. Thanks!!

I believe the chrome package on the XLT and Lariats adds a tip. It's a standard "feature" on the Platinum but I'm not a fan of the one on my truck...it's a beeotch to keep clean.

If you have stock exhaust...no. If you have an aftermarket exhaust...yes. A rolled exhaust tip will sound a little deeper & less "tinny" than a straight tip. Also, a larger outlet will produce a deeper tone. I guess the key word here is "tone". Will different sized tips make an exhaust louder...not really, but they have a factor in the tone the system will produce....
