Then after the Net is over, which last 25-30 minutes, the operator for that night calls the Memphis NOAA office and gives them the weather information called in by the hams. When severe weather is in the area, the Weather Net is activated, and local hams call in to report conditions live on the ground. We also work with the local Emergency Management Agency with helping keep communications up and running if the normal forms of communication go down due to damage from a storm.
That's pretty neat. That last bit is part of the reason I'd like to get a ham setup, in case disaster ever ruined communications.

I'm in the burbs of chicago, so I don't think my weather call ins would be very useful here, but that definitely sounds like a lot of fun. I'll have to look into this for the next project.

I just finished the install of my Icom 706. I am very happy with the results. The remote Head of the radio is mounted in a way that it doesn't interfere with normal truck operations and when I don't want the radio, I can remove the head and store it under the front middle seat compartment. Check out my pics.

Looks great! How did you mount the antennas in that spot on the bed? Just drilled through? Is there a stake hole there in the super crew? I did a fender mount because I didn't think that was an option for me. How's the reception?

I bet you have a 5.5 foot bed.

You just have a cover over the stake pocket, you can just cut a hole there.

The mount is a Ram Mount.. it includes the ball/plate that is attached to the dash, the adjustable arm, and a second ball/plate for the device you want to mount. I attached the OEM remote Radio Head bracket to the ball/plate assembly.

If you google search " Ram Mount" and check the image results, you will see there are many types of these mounts available. I used the one I had as I had it left over from a previous project. However, it worked out perfectly for my desired result.

The Antenna Mounts are designed fro the stake holes. Yes, there are stake pockets under the bed rail covers. Unfortunately with the short box, there are no guide lines or pop off covers, so I had to measure, drill, and then trim the rail caps to cut the holes out.

Reception is good.. I grounded the radio really well in the back of the cab, as well I ran an extra ground from the cab to the box. Combined with the strength of the mount's connection to the box, it gives me a good antenna ground.

Took me 2 weeks to cut the first one, yes, that long to get the nerve to cut it, and then 10 minutes to cut the second one.

What length is the arm you used?
