Bye, bye Ford Credit. Bye, bye 8.99% interest.

I played their game and paid about $100 in interest to get a $1,000 rebate. Kind of a half-*****ed way of doing business, but if that's what Ford wants, that's what Ford gets!

Note that if I had paid the loan off on Ford Credit's schedule, it would have cost me over $4,000 in interest over the life of the loan.

When I ordered my truck, I arranged financing ahead of time with my credit union.

Before the truck arrived, Ford started offering the "$1000 if you finance with Ford Credit." Their rate was 6.99% - the credit union was 4.99%.

I called my credit union agent, she said, "Oh, Ford is doing that again, huh? Just finance with them for the rebate, then as soon as you get the title in the mail in a few weeks, come on in." So I did - about three weeks after picking up the truck, I had my title and went in to my credit union. Refinanced and paid Ford Credit off before I ever made an official payment to them.

That was a few months ago. Got a nice letter from Ford Credit thanking me for my business.

I did a 5 year home equity loan at 3.74%. I get to write off the interest. Great rate plus a tax write off.

My salesman, who I was hooked up through a friend, advised me to to take the FMAC financing to get the rebates and then immediately refinance. The finance mgr went through the motions knowing that I was going to do just that based on my credit rating. I signed the FMAC paperwork when I took the truck, then went to the CU and refinanced without any penalties whatsoever. I only wish that I'd refi'd the very next day as FMAC gets you each day they have the loan.
