On my 2005 F250 I ran out of fuel on level ground and it said I had eight miles to empty. I was less than a mile from the gas station.

Last year I took a trip to Colorado for my hunting trip and I was able to drive approximately 25 miles past 0. When I finally stopped and filled up I was able to put 34.5 gallons in (I kept filling until fuel spilled out to make sure I had 36 gallons in there. I also did this before I left as well). So, I imagine that I could have gone 700 miles on a 36 gallon tank and about 55 miles or so past "0 miles until empty".

Default Is empty really empty?

My warning light to comes on at 100 miles until empty. Around town that 100 can change to 68 after just a few hills and stop lights. It can also go back up to 150 just as suddenly. Even after running it down to single digits I have only been able to put 34 gallons back in. I always reset one of the trip computers so I can see how many gallons I have used for peace of mind.

I always fill up at ¼. The fuel pump needs the fuel as a coolant. Don't like shortening the life span of a very expensive part.

Running on fumes is bad but running on 2 gallons isn't. The pump doesn't know the difference between 1/4 and 1/8 or 1/10 tank. You never run it dry but running the tank down to a gallon or so (or 14-23 miles to E) doesn't hurt it.

That said, I have never and will never let it get down to single digits.

I have no idea how far you can go past "empty" ... so far I have not let the meter get below 1/4 tank.
