Higher Miles on eco or lower on 5.4?
Hello, I am looking into getting a different truck and Im looking for some advice. Should I be worried about the mileage?
2009 F150 Super Crew 6.5' bed Platinum 5.4. The truck has a little over 146,000 miles. It would be from a private owner so there wouldn't be any type of warranty. Would it be better to keep looking or for a good price would this be something worth going through with?
Im also looking at a 2012 XLT with the eco boost and 174k on it. I would rather have the platinum but on either should I be worried about the miles?

I much prefer buying from a private owner so that I can actually talk with the previous owner of the truck and get a feel for his/her particular level of care for it. I'd feel much more comfortable with the 5.4 as its a more proven engine but that's just me. I've loved both my 2v and 3v 5.4 motors. Good torque, decent mpg (driving sensible) and reliable. My current is also a '09 crew 6.5 bed 4wd. The motor has plenty of power and performs well mated to the 6 speed auto. That's my .02.

I appreciate the response! I also feel more comfortable with a V8, I don't think there is anything wrong with the ecoboost. I just feel more confident that I can diagnose an issue on a V8. Also, they are the same price and I like that the 09 is a SuperCrew.

5.4 at those miles will have major major maintenance.
Power and mpg hugely favor the Eco. I've had two 5.4 and two Eco trucks.

That's a lot of miles either way. Especially for the age of the trucks. Both of those trucks will have a lot of considerations outside of the engines. That's a ton of wear and tear on the drivetrain and suspension regardless of how many of those miles are spent up and down the highway.
Both engines are going to require reading a code to diagnose many of the problems. I wouldn't let that sway your decision process. The EB just sounds funny for those of us that had V8s for years. I actually like how quiet it is at highway speeds.

Neither.
Too many miles on the eco and it's an xlt. The 5.4 I would avoid like the plague.
Wait till a better deal comes around

There is nothing wrong with a 5.4. It's a good motor I'd go with the 5.4 over a high mileage ecoboost. A lot of people in my. Family have 5.4s with well over 200k.

my experience also. Have had 2v and 3v and love both. Great low end power and driving sensibly I get better fuel mileage than many say they get with the 5.0 and EB.

I had a2005 5.4 with 120,000 and had the cam problems. Replaced them and still had the noise. When I did my research on eco motors, I found that in 2013 they fixed the problem with the humidity and moisture problems by redesigning the intercooler. I wanted either the 5.0 or 2013 of later Eco. I ended up with a 2012 5.0. Love it. I would wait for a better deal, aka less miles and not a 5.4. My .02.
