Default HD payload package = useless?

According to Ford's website?

If you configure a Lariat Eco Crew with a 6.5 bed and 3.73 Elocker, the max tow is 11,100 and the max payload is 2310.

Pay 1500 bucks more for the same vehicle sans Elocker for limited slip/heavy duty payload/max tow, the truck still comes up with the same tow/payload capacities.

What gives?

not sure if its useless, but if anyone plans to tow 11,000+ pounds regularly i'd definitely recommend an f250 instead.

^^This is incorrect.

If that's what the site says its wrong. Max payload ups the GVWR to 8200lbs, you can't get there any other way.

I have Max Tow but not HD Payload. My max payload is 1848 lb (GVWR 7650 lb). I would never be able to tow the rated 11300 lb without running out of payload. The ratings are definitely best case scenario.
If you plan to be heavy, HD Payload is definitely not useless, unless you plan to put most everything in the trailer and leave the truck nearly empty. Even then I'd bet it would be tough to stay legal.

Well, then it's extremely annoying that Ford can't get its "build a truck" feature to be worthwhile. A ton of the numbers, including prices, appear to be way off and have been for a few years in a row now.

I know there are a lot of configurations, but it's really not that hard to figure out how to get that E-tool functioning.

Me and like, 2 other computer guys could do it in a few hours. One would think Ford would care about this tool...kind of important.

It's very frustrating to try and build yourself the perfect truck on Ford's own website only to be told no, that configuration is nothing like it says on our website..

Another "wtf Ford" example:

It says the supercab payload is 2800 with ecoboost 3.73's, no HD payload package.

But it's 2300 with the HD payload Screw. And it's 2100 without the HD payload in some configurations.

Get with it Ford.

hey if you think ford needs to fix their online "build your own" tool, go check out the truck builder on he dodge ram site. ford's numbers may be off but atleast its easy to see whats going on the truck. dodge's truck builder is impossible...

Yes, the payload number on the Ford build&price website is busted. The max tow pkg and the HD payload pkg have the same tow rating, but the HD payload pkg adds 500 pounds more payload capacity over the max tow, and 1,000 pounds over the stock truck with neither max tow nor HD payload. But on that website, a Lariat SuperCrew Ecobost 4x4 3.55 e-locker without either max tow or HD payload shows the same payload as the 3.73 e-locker with max tow or the 3.73 LS with both max tow and HD payload.

On a 2012, max tow pkg and HD payload pkg or both have the same GCWR, so the same tow rating. However, max tow adds about 500 pounds additional GVWR, and HD payload pkg adds another 500 pounds.

Without the max tow pkg you're probably going to run out of payload capacity for hitch weight long before you get close to the tow rating. With the e-locker 3.73 (max tow but without HD payload) you probably cannot tie onto a TT that weighs more than about 9,000 or 10,000 pounds without exceeding the GVWR of the tow vehicle. And even with HD payload pkg, you still don't have much payload capacity so it's easy to exceed the 8,200 GVWR if you tow a TT that grosses more than 10,000 pounds.

Think for a second: If the GVWR is 8,200 and the payload is 2,300, that means the wet and loaded pickup weighs only 5,900 pounds. Fat chance that your pickup weighs only 5,900 pounds before you tie onto the trailer. So the Ford payload number is bogus anyway.

I don't know about 4x4s, but on my 4x2 the GVWR is 7,200, max tow adds 500 for 7,700, and HD payload adds another 500 for 8,200 GVWR. You need every bit of that 8,200 pounds GVWR if you plan to tow a TT that weighs more than 10,000 pounds without being overloaded, even with not much payload except a skinny driver.
