Issue: Dash warning to ‘Service AdvanceTrac’ keeps popping up

The error message is usually displayed after doing a sharp or full lock turn.

Possible Solutions:
  • Temporary- Straighten out your steering wheel and reset your truck.
  • Sticks may have gotten stuck in your wheel and simply need to be dislodged.
  • Reprogramming via dealer
  • Wheel sensor needs to be replaced
  • New steering rack

Had this light come on and off quite a few times. Dealer could never seem to fix it. Then one of the codes read that the circumferential area of my tires wells bigger than normal. I have stock pirellis and 20" wheels. I had my tires inflated to around 40-45psi. I have since dropped them all to 35 and the light has not yet come back on.

My coworker has a 13' 5.0 and asked me if I have ever had it to come on too as his did. I told him about this thread and the multiple items being down. But I asked him if he had any type of unusual driving event and he said he had to break really hard when someone pulled out in front of him, and that's when it came on. It is gone now and doing fine.

I have not experienced my steering wheel locking up while driving yet.....

Thank goodness I have an extended warranty. Just purchased the vehicle at 53k and it has 58k on it. It took the dealership 2 months to get my tags. I had to go to the dealership twice to get a new temp tag and now 3 times for this light coming on. Haha, make that 5x in the past 3-4 months for problems since purchasing a vehicle from them. I do understand I bought a used vehicle.....(First Ford)

1st time: Dealer charged me the $98 diagnostic fee and reset the ABS module. Said there was a TSB for the ABS module. *Also had them rotate my tires*

2nd time: Dealer said there was a "Ghost code". They said it was saying something about traction slipping or something to do with a circumferential problem . He said they usually see it when the vehicle has larger than stock tires (mine are all stock). He said they checked all tire pressures. Rears were at 40 and the fronts at almost 48. I told him the last time anybody touched those was when yall had the vehicle 3 days ago and rotated the tires.....he said "I know". They have since set the tires to stock specs and cleared the codes........ and the light came back on after having it back for 1 day.

3rd time: Taking it in this afternoon....
As stated, this has been a very common issue with a variety of possible solutions since the use of the electric power steering unit. The main root cause in cases of "ServiceAdvanceTrac" and associated issue of turn signals not staying on is the steerging angle sensor. Ford is not replacing the sensor independent of the rack and requires a new rack and alignment to resolve.

Most report this error when backing into a parking space or hooking up a trailer etc.

I have read other threads, and it seems like a lot of 2011 trucks have experienced this. I drive 2011 F150 5.0 Fx4 with only 38k miles.

Has anyone else experienced this with the turn signals not working, too? If so, what was the fix?
Mine just started this crap last week. Made a right turn and boom. The Service Advancetrac light came on and my turn signals don't stay on. Nothing like having to hold the turn signal up or down just to avoid a ticket or getting in an accident. Calling my local dealer tomorrow, but I am not impressed with them. I don't expect they will be able to fix it. I have been looking for a DIY fix for this stupid thing. I can't find anything other than the $1,500 steering rack replacement. It that's the case, this thing is getting traded.

For what it's worth: I used to get this issue sometimes when I would turn the steering wheel all the way to the right or left. Then it would go away after turning the vehicle off for a while.

Recently my windshield wipers would stay on the lowest setting after being turned off. The Ford dealer was replacing the wiper switch and said the connection was physically broken and the entire mechanism with the switch needed to be replaced. He said it controlled the Advanctrac in the module as well. It was a $61 part + labor. Since then I haven't seen it. Not sure if that helps, but I hope so. Keep us posted.

Will do. So far on my 2011 I've had the following issues:
Replaced front brake rotors twice.
Replaced front IWE's because of vacuum issues.
Truck "shudders" under hard acceleration from time to time.
Now this issue.
I used to drive a Dodge until it started to fall apart. If this does the same thing - bye bye Ford. I think I'm going to sell it and buy and old 1970's truck with ZERO electronics!

If the turn signals wont "engage" then that could very well be the problem, worn out switch. The mechanism for keeping the signal lit when turning is in the column under the steering wheel and not tied in to the rack itself. Interesting though that the advance trac is connected to it.

I thought that too, but I believe it is the bad steering angle sensor. The turn signals won't work in that instance either. When I go to the "truck apps" section on my main screen, the pitch and roll angle is working, but the steering angle does not display during a turn. It's going into the dealer Monday. Hopefully they can definitively root cause it and fix it. I'll let you know what they come up with.

I did have to replace the turn signal switch in my daughters Pontiac G5. It went bad and had the same symptoms of the turn signals not working. that was an easy fix on that little car.

I forgot to mention that anytime the Service Advancetrac message came up, the turn signals would not stay engaged. Once the notification went away, the signals worked fine. This would indicate to me a single root issue.

I got the truck back today. Day 1 = OK. They replaced the steering gear (assembly) and turn signal switch. I believe the steering assembly was the root cause, but they said both needed replaced. Total bill was over $1,400. Luckily I have an aftermarket warranty from Vehicle One and they paid for all of it but my $100 deductible. I'll let you all know if the problem comes back in the future.
