Default Grill Swap - Tips and tricks wanted

I'm looking to swap out my STX sport grill with the grill that came on the Tremor's (3 bar). I found a guy local to me that is willing to swap. His surround and grill is chrome. I am looking to keep my oxford white surround and only swap out the "insert". From looking at it quickly, it appears that the grill "insert" is just held on by bolts and clips. Has anyone done this? Ultimately if I could leave my surround on the truck, that would be great. However if that is not possible, it does not seem difficult from the youtube videos I have watched.

looking to swap from this: https://www.google.com/search?q=f150...WrFFR3QsRbM%3A

to this: https://www.google.com/search?q=f150...GsQ847_43wM%3A

As stated above, his surround and grill are chrome, I would like to pain the grill insert black eventually but just want to see if its possible to just swap the insert

I should also mention, my truck is a 2014 STX Sport. His truck is a 2013 Lariat. Will there be any problems with surrounds since he will be keeping his surround and I will be keeping mine?

Yes I have swapped the inner grill on my FX4 to your style (STX) grille style. It's held in by a bunch of built in clips that are really fragile and takes patients! Didn't break any in my swap.

When you did this, did you remove the entire inner grill and surround from the truck?

I have done a few grille swaps. Way easier to remove entire surround from truck. I did not buy any grille removal tools. I used a metal paint scraper wrapped with a thin cloth. Just slowly and gently pried the grille off. Then like previously stated the surround is secured by clips. Just take your time. Make the swap. That's a good trade. I'm currently looking for that grille myself

I've also been told that my 2014 STX sport grill insert will not fit in in his 2013 chrome surround nor will his 2013 Lariat (Tremor) insert fit in my 2014 surround. Can anyone confirm this? I had read another place that all 09-14 grill surrounds and inserts were interchangeable.

I have been told by numerous people, including manufacturers, that the 2014 stx sport grill is different than any other grill. It's the grill I have. You can trade shells out, but not inserts. I was told the shell is cut a slight bit larger on the inside.

Well that is disappointing. I know I don't want his chrome surround as there is no other chrome on my truck anywhere. I really don't want to pay for someone to paint it either

Decisions, Decisions. Need some more input before I don't go through with it the rest of the way.

So basically what it comes down to is if he wants to keep his chrome surround and i want to keep my oxford white surround, we can not trade? What would both of us need to purchase to make this work? It blows my mind that they would change something that unnecessary midway through the 12 gen
