Default Garage door opener question

I have read a lot about the visor homelink garage door opener, the cost, etc.
Now here is a question my searches could not answer: will the opener work without the truck key in the ignition? If so, that would be a deal breaker for me. The reason is that I park my truck in the driveway, but always enter through the garage. So I need an opener in the truck, but I do not want it to be usable for somebody who breaks into my truck (like at night or even when we are away with my wife's car).
Thanks for any input on this!

Wouldn't you have the same problem if you left an opener in your truck? A rookie thief would probably be less likely to find/use the home link in the visor, as opposed to finding an opener in your center console.

Yep, that's true, so right now I take the transmitter inside the house every night. Then, of course, in the morning I forget it and have to go back in to get the transmitter, LOL.
One other solution is to get this:
Amazon Amazon
Of course that is not quite as elegant, but also a lot less expensive. I already have one of those on the outside of the house. So I tried it: with the protective sleeve removed, it fits right into one of the overhead sun glass storage things. I am thinking of getting another one and attaching it with velcro up there ... Now they'd have to break into the truck and then crack the code, LOL.

Forget all the garage door openers and key pads. Move out of that neighborhood. JK! I never lock my garage or my vehicles. Can't beat living in a small Wisconsin town.

LOL, that would be kind of drastic. The neighborhood actually is fine, you just don't want to give a couple teens the easy entry.

My wall mounted button inside the garage has a "lock" switch on it. It locks the opener to everything except the main wall button. I use that.

Ford's opener works without the key in the ignition.

I'm pretty sure that you can wire it so that it only works when the truck is running or in accessory mode. You would just have to run a wire to the fuse box to find a switched circuit.

I installed one in a previous vehicle and the wire that was already in the visor was a switched wire.

Here is what I ended up doing. Serves the purpose, meets all of my requirements and cost less than 10% of the cost of the homelink visor. Looks okay, I think, and is only visible when I use it. Attached with velcro.
What do you guys think?
