For those of you considering the washer method to install your DZ Tailgate Assist on your '09-'14, as detailed here...:

…I definitely recommend it. But be SURE to use your own washers and nuts. I made the mistake of using the extra hardware that came with the kit and found out the hard way that just because something looks like a washer, doesn't make it a washer! The stamped ring cracked within 2 days.



I've since reinstalled using stainless washers & lock nut and now it's good to go. The washer install is surprisingly easy and you really don't need to remove the tailgate liner cover.

After trying the nutsert first, I definitely still recommend the washer method. Just use the right hardware so you'll only have to do it ONCE!

Yup, I did this one week after installing my DeeZee! That Nutsert, Blows ***... Mines been Solid since...

1 year later and the nutsert on mine is still holding tight. Not sure if it's materials and instructions or the installer's lack of experience using them. Don't remember exactly how many turns I cranked down on it but it wasn't what deezee recommended that much is certain.

I have a slight advantage as I use nutserts on a daily basis so I know just when to stop tightening them.

How did you do it without removing the tailgate cover?

If you remove the closest 4-5 bed liner retention screws (driver's side), you'll be able to lift that side of the tailgate liner and slide in your hand and wrench-on-a-stick. You only need to lift it 3-4 inches and the recessed access hole in the gate is easy to find.

You can even pop the edge of the liner over the base of your raised tailgate pole to minimize the flex.

And as the original poster mentioned, I found that the liner retention screws need very little torque to remove or replace.

Just did this a few minutes ago and it feels much more solid than the crappy nutsert. I didn't bother to glue the nut to the washer. I just took a small piece of duct tape, stuck it to the backside of a box-end wrench, put the nut and washer in and wrapped the sides of the tape over slightly to hold them there. I used a paint stick as my extension pole.

Mine was a little tricky, but I got it solid now, Cranked until it felt right, it is rather solid, but only time will tell. Could be a CoonAss thing though.
