Hey guys - did this today. Thanks for the info. I feel so good having this squared away. Ford should be embarrased for this design.

Default Broke the tabs...still worked

Thanks - worked and wow...what a poor design. An axle that just free floats with no way to keep it from working out of its socket?

Nobody else seemed to have trouble pushing down the tabs - dont know if I had lost my patience but I ended up breaking off the two tabs on the side opposite the hinge. They arent required since it's held in with the screws to the filler pipe.

Default Just bought a 2010 FX4 w/ this problem.

I didn't notice it at the dealership or on the test drive. But the next day at home, the gas cap cover was flopping around in the wind. Will have to try out the fix noted on this thread tonight... no point in having the dealership install a new one with the same problem...

Remove the (3) 8mm head bolts that attach the neck to the filler door assembly. From behind the assembly tou have to reach up from the inner fender and push the plastic latches that hold the assembly in place. I could only reach two so I pried the assembly out with a screwdriver wrapped in a rag. What I found out after this is, there is a plastic pin that holds the door in place with a spring attached to it. The pin somehow worked it's way up and let the door flop around. What you have to do is remove some of the plastic from around where the pins goes through the bottom of the assembly. About 1/8" will do. You just need a bit more of the pin sticking out than before. Put a washer on the end of the pin and drill a small hole through the plastic pin just above the washer. I took a paperclip and straightened it and put it through the hole above the washer and bent it into an "S" shape to keep it from coming out. This holds the washer down and keeps the pin in place. If someone can tell me hopw to post pics I will.
Thank you so much for this post! I had a fuel door failure at 52K miles (2010 f150 Screw) and found out it was not covered under extended warranty. Followed your directions and found the pin backed out and spring loose. Where the bottom of the pin is on the housing I did have to remove a little sleeve there because the pin did not extrude enough housing enough to drill a hole for the paper clip.

Dealer wanted almost $200 for parts and labor so I feel great! It did take me a litter longer than 20 minutes but its all good.

Plus my aero dynamics are back in line

Thanks - about to go fix this myself now. Was quoted $290 for replace the bowl and spring at the stealership that I was having my AC fixed at today. (didn't manage to get it fixed yet, and then they pranged my front fender against another truck) Told me 4 days to get in line to have the resistor changed - Large, National Ford Dealer on West side of Houston - I 10. I am so done with relying on them to fix stuff.....

Default assembly out of whack completely

After reading your helpful post I removed the fuel door assembly only to find that the spring was loose and the "little hole" on the fuel door side was out of whack. After a few attempts of figuring out how the spring was installed (was loose on my assembly) I stumbled across some great pics at an ebay posting for a new assembly. Make sure your spring/assembly matches the pic bellow or else the door will open by itself or not close at all.

BTW, on my 2010 the part# is 9L3Z-9927936-B ....do a quick search on ebay and you will find the entire assembly for around 40 bucks, I almost broke mine so I was looking for a backup....way cheaper than the dealership.
