I bought my 2010 a little over a month ago and after a few days noticed an excessive buildup of brake dust on just the front drivers side rim.

Took it in under suspicion of a stuck caliper and they replaced the caliper. Another few days and same excessive buildup of brake dust. Took it in again and they said the slides were hung so they lubed them up. Another few days and again an excessive buildup (and by excessive I mean after three days of driving, primarily freeway, the rim was black). Also had a squeak when braking and while driving on occasion would hear the brakes squeak when not braking. A quick tap on the brakes would release them again.

Today I took the tire off and checked it out myself. The slides seemed to move fairly easily. I cleaned out the brake dust build up and put it all back together.

A few things I noticed:
Lug nuts were incredibly tight. Had to use a breaker bar to free them.
Brake pads had some gouging on them (see pictures)
The pads didn't have any hardware on them to attach them to the caliper.
Rotors appeared to be in good shape on both sides.

Any suggestions on what could be causing this?

Shouldn't be any hardware holding the pads in the caliper, they sit on slides in the caliper bracket. Looks like they used 2 inboard pads or 2 out board pads. Just a guess though. Very common mistake with the brakes on these trucks.

Looks like a salvage yard caliper, (oem and new after market do not have #'s painted on them) it's possible the truck has been wrecked, I have seen bent steering knuckles create problems like this.


One way to be sure is to have the alignment checked and the side to side variation of steering axis inclination (SAI) compared. If SAI is off you would need to find out which side is closer to spec and replace the other side.


That's where I would start.

Hmmm, didn't take a close enough look at the pads to see if they were the same ones. Thought the dealer would have noticed it when they looked at them twice.

Grabbed this pic from a youtube video, but I remember those brackets when I helped a friend change his brake pads last year.

Not entirely sure if they are the culprit.

Caliper was replaced by the dealership the first time I brought it in. Guess the Ford dealership didn't go with genuine Ford parts.

Yeah, I checked and all the lines were bled.

Could be the brake hose is bad. I have had it happen with a Chevy. They collapse internally and can hold pressure after it's applied. Kinda like a check valve.

Thanks for the suggestion. Ran some errands and the rim was hot when I got back so I am pretty sure it's still hanging.

I will go back to the dealer with these suggestions/ideas.
