Ford sync with aftermarket radio

Seperate mic although you may be able to wire the stock one, My wife says that I am way clearer and can even talk to people with the windows down.
You can program the phone button through the SWI but I have not tried as by the time I got everything soldered up I was 3 hours into the install and was relieved that everything worked on the SW and HU evrn the media button to scroll through. There is a phone button on the unit that takes you there.
I was pretty bummed as my wife has sync in her Flex that she had a year before I got my truck and hers works great. I have 0 patients so I didnt fiddle with voice training plus I was looking for a reason to put a touchscreen in! lol
The down side is the harness can be expensive, another reason that I dumped it. I get better Ipod or hard drive integration. Only downside is that eventhough it has BT it does not have ad2p so I have to plug my phone in to the front 3.5 jack to play pandora or to hear my GPS directions. I will be gettong the GPS module to add on soon and it uses Garmin OS.

haha, I hear ya, if i didnt already have a touch screen I wouldnt hesitate to upgrade to one either! I have a blackberry tour on the stock system and people cant even tell when i switch back and forth from handset to hands free. Never had any problems in my 2008 sport trac with sync either, though they could tell the difference, but could still hear me fine with it. Probably mic placement.

Yeah, mine was in the mirror. I read about the TSB but didnt get it done because of the upgrade.

I'm currently looking at s on dash nav. But I can't get anyone to tell me if I can keep the phone controls on the steering wheel. I have an alpine unit pick out ready to buy but I want to be able to answer the phone with the steering wheel button. Anyone get the function to work with aftermarket deck?

I have not read anything about it. The SWI from both manufactures are programmable. I am really not sure if you can program it for that though. The answer buttons are so large on my screen that it is pretty easy to reach over and hit it.
I thought I would miss using it on the wheel but I found it is no big deal. All other controls work though, Vol up/down, track up/down, media scroll.

I can't believe in this day and age that is the best adapter there is. Who wants a wonky looking external LCD when Ford has already provided the vehicle with one? That cannot possibly be the only option.

I think you can use the stock display instead of the one it comes with.

How?
I'd love to retain Sync, but I'm not going to use some funky external screen.
From my understanding once you unplug the factory radio the ford display will only display "Built ford Tough" or whatever it says.
Thanks,
