First Oil Change?
#71
I'm of the 3k mile camp. I've always done it at 3k for all of my cars. So what would you do? I don't drive the truck much, I have a company vehicle that I drive 5 days out of the week and the 150 just sits in the driveway the rest of the time. My wife is actually afraid to drive it even though I keep telling her to. I might wait for 5k and take it in for the first one.
I have a 2002 saturn as a daily driver and I sometimes change the oil at 2500 miles. It doesn't burn a drop of oil for 2000 miles but between 2000-3000 it goes through a quart. I generally change it between there. I've tried lots of oils, viscosities, synthetic, etc and it just burns oil between 2000-3000 miles. Never done an analysis on it but I assume it is sheared down to a thinner weight. This is a case of poor engine design, because I know many saturn owners with the same problem.
But if in doubt, get an oil analysis done. It will tell you what kind of life is left in the oil. I haven't done my ecoboost yet. I may or may not get around to it at some point. But lots of folks on Bobistheoilguy.com have done ecoboost UOA and it indicated fuel dilution by 5,000 miles. I could smell a bit of gas on the dipstic at 5,000 on mine so I changed it (well, let the dealer change it).

I won't change any modern vehicle much before 5,000 miles (or 6 months between changes). With quality oil it is a waste unless something is wrong with the engine design or operation.
