I was really torn with this when I was buying my truck coming from a 2000 5.3 Silverado. I really liked the look and feel of the newer ones. However I came to realize out side of a bit more horse power and interior exterior face lift it was essentially the exact same truck. I believe the R+D team at ford built a better product this time. This probably had to do with all of the economic turmoil GM continues to suffer with. There are all kinds of other features on the f150 gm cant match the interior layout is first class. The electric assisted steering is also a great bonus. I also found the upgrade trim levels to be more affordable and a better fit for my lifestyle with ford.
The AWD transfer case wouldn't even be a concern for me personally. The traction control and 4wd in my F-150 perform extremely well for me, even with the Goodyear tires that came stock. Granted I'm not in a mountainous environment like Colorado, but the winters here in Illinois can be pretty bad too. Regardless of that...more power, better fuel economy, better interior, and an overall design that isn't over 10 years old...the F-150 wins hands down. When I was looking at trucks to replace my 2008 Tacoma I did look at the Silverado...for about 15 minutes and quickly crossed it off my list. If you really want a Silverado, I'd suggest waiting until they update it. But who knows when that may be.

Reason: Redundant statement is redundant
I've driven in snow and rain for 20 years w/o AWD transfer case but if it worries you that much get the Chevy. What would worry me is looking at that god awful fugly interior, other than that Chevy doesn't look too bad (Sierra looks better imo)

I am a long time Chevy man and only recently bought my first ford. The AWD in the chev works awesome. I had the 5.3 and the 6.0 engines in my 2006 and 2009 and they both got better gas mileage then my F150 ecoboost gets under the same driving conditions. The interior is dated compared to ford and even dodge. I switched over because I like the interior looks and space, the 6.5' bed, and the ecoboost engine. I miss the AWD, and the gas mileage of the GMC though. For piece of mind in the winter it was awesome.
Ford has Advance-Trac with Roll Stability Control and a Trailer Sway Control feature. Good features for towing concerns you may have. There are a couple short videos on Ford's website to watch. Not sure if Chevy has these features...
Power and towing capacity. Your in the mountains, the Chevy is getting maxed out with 6000 lb trailer with 5.3. The 5.0 Ford is laughing at that load, and had the already mentioned trailer stability control if you get the factory integrated brake controller.
