Question F150 2011 eco boost power steering problem..

A couple of days ago my power steering went. I booked it in to my Ford dealer, who tells me I need a new steering rack approx value 1300.-
They need to order part in and I have to go back to have it installed. I drive it all the way back home 100km and steering is very hard....
I park at home for a few min, then leave home and guess what..... Power steering works.... How can that be a mechanical problem?
Help........

Just curious... Did you check your power stirring fluid? Is your Power stirring pump working properly?

I hope he doesnt have power steering fluid. Ecoboost trucks have electronic power steering.

Yep, same thing happened to me at 65K on my '12. Dealer charged $1800 to repair, truck out of warranty. Good luck to you. It's the electric steering on these trucks and the unit itself is expensive. The reason it's going in/out is because it's an electrical part and failing. I had mine towed, I didn't feel safe driving it without PS.

BTW I am still fuming mad about this repair and I will look hard at other trucks when it's time to replace. "Built Ford Tough" what a marketing campaign.

Why are you upset? Stuff breaks, goes out, etc. Just the luck, or unluck, of the draw. Nothing lasts forever

My truck is having the rack replaced right now. They had to order it and if all goes well I will have it back in a couple days. Total down time Thursday to Thursday, I got super lucky as I had just bought the truck used and the dealer has taken care of everything including the rental for a week.

Truck has 41,000 miles on it, mine is being replaced due to a bad sensor for the advance track system.

Just to be clear, I'm not upset that it broke. Stuff does indeed happen. I'm upset that I had to pay for a major repair on a 3 year old truck. I'm upset that the part from Ford is $1300. I buy new so I won't have to spend this kind of money on a truck until it has over 100,000. I expect my stuff to last without having to spend major bucks to keep it going.

It makes me wonder, if the truck had something this expensive break at 65K what can I expect at 120K?

Hi obert,

Sounds like the wheels are in motion! Please keep me updated.

You can buy the rack on rockauto for half of that and replace it yourself its pretty easy to do.
