Lariat!!!! I love the fords in lariat trim... But in all seriousness get whichever one you get the best deal on and which one you prefer. Sometimes you see a nice lariat or XLT or FX that looks nicer then anything on the lot you know what I'm saying it just has that look. But whatever you get I'm sure will be nice

First decide which powertrain you want: 4wd or 2wd, then engine (most engine choices are available in all trims you mention)
From there decide upon which features are important to you (leather options, infotainment, power groups, lighting, etc)
Lastly I would think about exterior cosmetics as those are some of the easiest items to change with aftermarket parts.

One thing on my 2011 XLT that I didn't think of is rear a/c. I had the truck fully loaded with people during a heat wave a couple months ago. People in the front were freezing, back passengers felt like they were in a sauna. If you plan on using the back seats for kids, friends, family a lot. Keep that in mind.

^^^^^What TeeJay said is why I went with the FX. I bought an FX2 (probably should have gotten an FX4) but I did make certain I got the locking rear diff for boat ramps. My FX is the most basic one you can get (no leather, MFT or any other stuff). I really was set on an XLT and picked it out online, negotiated then went to pick up. Then I realized it did not have rear vents. Some guys say you don't need them - but the people in the back seat have seemed to appreciate them. I am glad I went with the FX also for appearance reasons. I had a Lariat that was somewhat loaded for $2k more - but the FX appealed to me more. I do wish I had the powerfold mirrors though.
I am actually very impressed with the cloth seats in the FX - had planned on adding leather immediately - but now I really do not have plans to.
Good luck on your choice.

I love ignorant people...
What do you consider expensive? $100 $200 $500 $1000? What do you want to do with it? Lift it? Lower it? Leveling kit?
You can do some minor customizing with Plastidip, it is a spray paint that can be removed.
