EcoBoost vacuum pump

I'd really like to see you post your comments here: https://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/Vehicl...nt/index.xhtml I do agree with you, because you don't know when the pump has failed, this does need to be recalled.

International man of Myst
After reading so many people wringing hands of minor issues to the NHTSA and rolling my eyes, this is the one I hope people report. With so little warning prior to failure, I'm concerned just a little bit. So far, it doesn't seem like a lot of people are affected. I wonder if a vacuum gauge would be a worthwhile investment on this....

Love My Eco
Add me to the list of failed pumps, although I never experienced the noises posted here, I had more of a chuffing (for lack of a better word) noise 2-3 days a week, at cold startup that would last 10-15 seconds. It sounded more like a pulley noise.
Went to reposition my truck on my very slight declined driveway with my other car several feet behind me, had my foot on the brake the whole time, but when I went to stop the pedal went rock hard and I was pushing harder and harder and still rolling. Then it made an ABS activating noise as I pushed with much more force. I got it to stop in time before hitting my own car luckily.
If I let it warm up completely to where the idle is low it is fine, I'm guessing as when it's in fast idle it is not producing any or enough vacuum on it's own. I pulled the headlight, had my wife start the truck up with my hand on the pump and my ear near it, heard and felt nothing. Then I had her mash the brake many times and still not a peep or any vibration from the unit at all.
2011 EB, with 58,000 miles on it, and last EB vehicle if not last Ford. Should be a recall, how many injuries or deaths have the bean counters allotted to this issue?

Funny--i read this thread this morning and have had the vacuum pump noise in the winter a couple time when it was very cold out--didn't think too much about it...
Just a few minutes ago I had to move my truck to the bottom part of my driveway--I started it up, revs were still high, put it into drive, rolled down the driveway, which is on a decline and I was backed up---applied the brake and the pedal was hard and I wasn't stopping until I almost got to the road and it abruptly stopped.....
I think the trick is to wait until the rpms are stable before proceeding...I just had my truck at the dealer on Monday for maintenance.....I'll closely monitor this.

I have a vacuum gauge on mine, it still shows vacuum when the brakes don't work right at times. not sure where the garmin gets its vacuum reading from on the truck but my guess is not from the brake system.

So here is a little update, I had the pump replaced but only after waiting for weeks for the part.
One oil change later (after my pump was replaced) I was told I need a brake job........ So somehow between the time the pump was replaced, and now Approx 3k miles my front brakes disintegrated?
So I drove my truck for a month with this problem and the proper brake feel never returned. Now Im told my front brakes are shot. rear brakes are over 80 percent left, coincidence? I bet there is a brake bias issue when vacuum is not correct and it destroyed my front pads / rotors. Thanks Ford.
Get it back today minus 200 plus dollars. If it works right I will be happy but I am not pleased and will be following up my original report to the NHTSA.

50k is when the pump went out. 80 percent or more of the driving is highway.
stops better now but not quite right. The new pads will need time to set though so I am babying it.
drove my moms Honda when it was in the shop as I couldn't use my Wife's car and when stopping I kept launching forward. I have gotten too used to the truck now and using the similar pedal pressure practically go through the windshield on passenger cars. It was never like this before. My truck used to stop better than my wife's.
its ok on the freeway, but at parking lot speed its ridiculous.
