Default Steering Failure

I have a 2015 F150 with just over 7,000 miles. I was traveling the interstate when I lost all power steering. I first got a Hill Start Assist failure message then minutes after that I got a Advanced Trac service message. About an hour after that I lost power steering with No Warning. I eventually got power steering back, however lost it again and hour later. The truck has been at the Ford service center for days as they have been communicating with Ford Corporate. Now I'm told parts are on order.

Warning F150 owners... hold on to your steering wheel!

Does anyone here have any magic to converting the Engineering number on the rack - to an actual part number?

I have a rack that I picked up a year ago (or so) that I have not been able to determine what "specific" model(s) it fits.

EL34-3D070-BB (yes, it's verified and double-checked)

Brand new... not a speck of dirt on it... was "lost freight".

SO FAR... the best I've found was 2014 (and possibly 2013) F150 Stdcab, 4x4, no HD tow pkg. I'm told it's an update from the "AB" suffix.

Anyone have any better info, or can verify?

Has anybody taken one of these apart to see what is actually failing? If it's just seals going out, I would think a good mechanic could repair the unit. I wonder if changing the fluid regularly would help prevent failures on these racks?

I think it ends up happening due to the tierod angles changing when a level kit or a drop kit is put in.

It's not a very robust unit. Will be interesting to see what they do for the rack on the new 2017 raptor. You might be able to fit a 6.2L raptor rack into the truck but then you need an external electrically driven pump or need skills to fan up a pump and pulley mount for the 6.2L stuff.

You will likely always have a service advance track light up due to the electric rack not being there.

Most kits recommend disconnecting power from the units when installing them because shock (from knocking ball joints and tie rod ends out with a hammer) cause a short inside the unit. I think this causes it, not the angles.

Going to revive an old thread here.. I have 2011 FX4, 5.0L with 102,000km on it. Since about 100k, I have had a light knocking noise in the front when I wiggle the steering wheel back and forth while parked, or if I'm driving really slow(pulling into or out of a parking spot) I got a clunking/knocking sound. I have had no codes or messages in my message center, no failure while driving, just a light clunking noise.

Normally it would sound like a tie rod end gone, but I checked both inner and outer and they seem in good shape. I have a 2" Level in it and 35" tires but have had it in for over a year with no issues.

Is this a steering rack failure? Or sorry, steering rack on its way out? I'm just about ready to get it to my mechanic to take a look at it.... I'm afraid of the Ford dealer with the prices that have been reported!!

It's only well I'm in 2wd and moving slow, or parked, not over any bumps. Someone told me it's a intermediate shaft but I'm not sure how to check that.

Could be ball joints upper or lower too.

Could be intermediate shaft universal joints too.

With a level and 35s quite well could be your ball joints.
