Default Drivetrain rattle when going up a hill..any idea what it could be?

The last few days I have noticed a rattling noise coming from under the truck. It usually happens when I am in my neighborhood driving up a hill going about 20-25 mph and about half way up the hill when the truck is ready to drop down to the next lowest gear it will make a rattling noise. It occurs around 1000-1200 RPMs and it stops once the transmission shifts into the next lower gear. It sounds like the noise that your radio antenna makes if it is not screwed onto the base tightly and it rattles back and forth just a bit but just a little louder than that.

Has anyone else noticed this or have any ideas what it could be? Flywheel, torque converter, etc. I will be taking the truck in to the dealer in a few weeks for some other items but just curious as to what this could be.

Thanks,
Dwayne

Metal on metal sound? My truck did have a sound like a loose heat shield on the exhaust. Took to dealer confirmed, and supposed to be fixed but I heard it the other day again. My truck is problem prone though.

Default Driveline Noise Concerns

My 2010 F150 XLT Reg cab 4X4 5.4L 3V Flex Fuel with 6R80 6 spd auto and 3.55 final drive ratio is making noise coming from the drive line. I took the truck to the dealership and they had it for 2.5 days and could not figure out what the problem was. Since then Ford has determined the problem to be the following OASIS Special Service Message:

21578 DRIVELINE RATTLE NOISE 25-30 MPH UNDER LOAD IN 4X2 MODE - 4X4 6R80 UNITS ONLY
2009-2010 F-150 4X4 vehicles with 6R80 transmission only. Some customers may be concerned with a rattle noise that occurs at 25-30 mph in 4X2 only, during lugging events especially on uphill inclines when the engine load is increased during the maneuver. It also may surface during tip outs during the same speed range and lugging conditions. This is the result of high torsional inputs from the powertrain being transmitted through the torque converter and transmission into the rest of the driveline. The noise has been determined to be the mode clutch arrangement in the transfer case (both esof and msof). Replacement of components will not alter the condition. This is a normal vehicle characteristic and service should not be attempted. This condition does not affect performance or durability of the vehicle. Effective Date 11/11/2010

This solution to me is totally unsatisfactory. If the truck had a door panel that rattled they would fix the problem. What it looks like to me is that because it is an expensive repair I'm expected to live with the problem. I guess this is Ford's new "Cash for Clunkers Program" I pay good cash and in return get a brand new "Clunker"

As much as I agree... find me a dealer that will fix any rattle or noise... So far every dealer I try around here says any noises are only 12 month/12,000 mile. I got no help from ford customer service either. I even told them I'm never buying a ford again.

Happens with my 2010 XLT 4x4 5.4L, 3.55 SCAB too. Sounds and behaves just like if the tranny were manual and it's in 4th, lugging up a hill at 25 MPH @ 1000-1200 RPM. I have a similar incline in the entrance to my development.

I presume the default aggressive/close up-shift patterns on the 6R80 err the side of saving fuel, emissions, etc.

My experiment was to try Tow/Haul mode for a week. Worked like a charm and shifted up the inclines more appropriately and was much quieter, albeit at ~2000 RPM @ 25 MPH.

Default What is the sollution?

How many of you have taken your trucks back to the dealership to have something done about this problem? I'm currently running up against a block wall with Ford. They act like it is not a big deal. They state "there is no problem with the truck, this is a normal sound" I don't think enough people are complaining. I told them there is a problem and that even if it does not hurt the truck it will hurt customer relations.

When I took my truck into ford the transmission guy said it was driveline torque, he said I got nothing to worry about LOL. He said it had to do with the new trucks being so tight.
