Default Dirty air filter = 3+ mpg

Okay, so for months I've been bitching about my lousy gas mileage.
I've been getting 13.5 around town and 16 point whatever, on the highway.
My truck just turned 20,000 miles and just thought I'm ready for a new filter. Man, was that thing filthy black.
So, put in a Fram and within 20 minutes I couldn't get over a couple things.
#1 It didn't feel like it was dragging ***, like it had been feeling.
#2 My mileage jumped up to 16, almost 17 around town. Then I got on the highway later in the day and it consistently was at 20+ mpg's.
Now, it is 3 days later, and the readings are the same.
I didn't want to post up, till I knew for sure, it wasn't a fluke.
I've had 15 vehicles and none have been so dramatically improved from a clean air filter.
Here are yesterday's readings.
Rough pictures...but I was driving.

I changed mine out at 12,000 miles and was astonished how dirty it was. I never, in my entire life, had a air filter housing fight me like it did on this one. It took me a good 20 minutes to get all three clips back in and correct. What a pain. I do know that around 10,000 is about max I want to let it go...

It was a pia getting those three tabs in, no doubt!
I'm guessing it would've been a hell of a lot easier, separating it from the tube.
Ya, I don't know why I waited this long. It's not like me.

Why not toss in an K&N OEM replacement while you're in there?

That was something I learned in a hurry when I was a Ford tech. It's always easier if you take the tube off.

Oiled filters like the K&N just lead to more problems down the road, and the only way to flow more through the factory intake is to open up the pores in the filters which lets more debris in. I'm a firm believer that the best intakes for these trucks is the stock one.

The only issue you may see with a K&N, is if you over-oil it. You can get oil on your MAF which will throw your cpu for a crazy loop, and your truck won't run. I run a clean K&N, with a VERY light amount of oil... and they tend to flow better... and with the light oil, from what I have read, do better at grabbing the fine particles as well. Finding the right amount of oil to use is what is critical. I have never once had an issue in the last 5 or 6 cars I have owned where I have used one. YMMV

K&N's are the biggest, most over rated pieces of junk made. If they don't get their act together and go away from oiled filters, 10 years from now they will be out of business.

OEM is the way to go...

Yep, with all my Ford trucks this is the case when mpg goes down. Really bad when towing, down in the 7 and 8's when norm is 10 - 11 mpg without high winds.

When ever I start seeing poor mileage, I change the air filter whether it looks dirty or not, and then see my milage go up.

K&N Filter void warranty because the oil in their filters coats sensors and causes them to fail. Neither my Ford or Nissan dealers will warranty engine issues when they see K&N filters installed.

OEM filter all the way, I've seen what a k&n can do to a turbo.
