That's why I said usually.
What I did.with the wife's old Malibu was I bought a oem remote start off ebay. I paid somewhere around 100$ for it. I took the two remotes into the local Chevy dealership and they agreed to reflash the ecm for 45$. Couldn't beat that deal.

Its so frustrating reading most of you have paid between an average of $40-$70, some of you even NOTHING to get the remote start activated in IDS!! I have 2 dealers in my city and one wanted to charge me $170 to program 2 keys and activate remote start. The other wanted to charge me a little over $200!! Had the keys programmed by my locksmith for $75 plus taxes. Now, gotta see how I can get the remote start activated!! Lol.

I sucked it up and put in a OEM remote start, it was $220 my cost for the kit, dealer didn't charge me to program it or anything, I had a couple different remote starts in different vehicles and I always had problems, it was always will this kit needs a special resistor to work with this and so on

I've used Viper from DEI for the past 12 years.

I am savvy with electronics but on a $49,000 truck I wasn't about to do it myself
and possibly cause myself headaches with warranty work if an issue arose.
I paid the $450, and used the place the dealers use......I've used them before so I trust them.
My cousin had REPEATED issues of an aftermarket remote start / alarm that would CONSTANTLY shut his vehicle off randomly. The cost to troubleshoot electrical makes it prohibitive to let a noob install it.

I got my oem long range remote from some ford dealer on ebay, $199 shipped. installed it myself in about 20 minutes. Had to find a dealer who wasn't retarded and knew what and IDS system was. Found one, took 40 minutes to activate and make sure all was working. Cost me $60 at the dealer.

Same with remote access though. I bought the parks, installed myself and he set it up from his desktop no charge. No need to deal with Ebay or some US dealer if the local guy is reasonable. But after 14 years at that dealer... the guy quit and I don't know where he went... so no more good service.
