You have a lot of "buddies who know stuff" haha
FWIW I own a 2014 Explorer Limited as well and it has been a complete disaster on wheels. It is, after all, number one spot on Consumer Reports most unreliable vehicles. "Haha". Right along with 4 other Ford vehicles "haha"
Dude, get a grip. My F150 had "rust" on every piece of chrome on it and it was like that almost off the lot. I am not going to hack on Fords. I owned several. Still have one. The one with the least issues was the Roush GT. The F150 was plagued by little ****. Honestly though- it's a truck. Ram and Ford are the top two hands down. I come here to check things out because I still like the Fords and appreciate a well designed capable machine. Both are what I would consider just that. "Haha".
The Ram met my needs for a good price and is turning north of 20MPG. Not sure if your buddies dad understands throttle is progressive and doesn't require his foot completely on the floor?
Not trying to be a dick, but honestly...

Drive what you like. Enjoy the Ram. If the sales guy wasn't such a dick, I might've been driving a Copperhead Orange metallic Ram Sport instead of my 2013 FX4.

I have a 2012 Ford Explorer Limited.. loaded with all exceptions one... the roof rack cross bars. Once they finally got the fix for the myFord Touch system it has been perfect. my only complaint till that point was the MyFord Touch. Everything was awesome, now everything IS awesome.

"haha" guy is the same guy that asked how to get rid of the police scanner on his dash that had an XM Satellite Radio logo on it.

Still on the "to fix" list:
Leaking sunroof, MyFordTouch, park assist sensors, ignition (won't detect fobs randomly and won't start), lane change assist sensors freak out randomly, and our newest one- using any Auto Trac setting other than normal kills all the power.
They think they have it all figured out now- one module is being a freak. Hopefully this is the end of it

I got my new one in late, late November. I adore that truck. I was happy to be rid of the 2011 for sure. Pretty much the same stuff as your explorer but with more complex mechanical problems, and I dealt with it for 2 years. My dealer really came through for me, beat Ram and GM's price by a significant margin.
