Default Cracked Battery ?

I walked by my 14 5.0 today and noticed a wet spot on the ground in front of the right front tire. Opened the hood noticed the battery and the windshield washer was the only thing close to the area of the wet spot. I touched the liquid and found it to be battery acid. The top of the battery was dry. Opened the caps the water level down to the plates. I assume the side or bottom is cracked. Made appt. at the dealer on Monday. Wow a 6400 mile battery.

Surprising. My first thought would be cold weather and battery swelling but that isnt the case.

Thanks hetman, it will be getting a baking soda and water bath when I get it home. Tothemax I could understand it to if that were the case, but cold has not come yet. Still got the top down on the Miata's .

Wouldn't overheating also cause a battery to swell ?
Overcharging = Overheating = maybe something they will/should check

Tothemax - Surprising. My first thought would be cold weather and battery swelling ...
As long as the battery's electrolyte is good and it's not deeply discharged, the battery will not freeze and ergo not swell as the result of it.

Plugged vents could also cause the battery to swell and crack.

The dealer states they could not find the leak on the battery. They replaced the battery, no more leaks.
