Cooper Discover ST Maxx Review (pics)
So I just bought my 2012 F-150 FX4 SCrew shortbed 5.0 v8 3.73, 2 months ago, and went right to work on it. Fit it with a Magnaflow and put the Bilstein 5100's on the middle setting (1.5") to level it out and just threw on some bigger tires last week.
I was originally going for the Toyo Open Country AT II's but they were backordered for 6 weeks. I was able to get the Cooper Discover ST Maxx's right away and for a great price ($234/tire) from tirecrawler in 295/70r/18. Tire looks awesome, but the performance drop I experienced is killing me. Equals to about a 34.26" tire.
Super sluggish, at least a 3 MPG Loss, and there is no accelerating in 6th gear. I have the 5.0 V8 with 3.73 gears, and it has to drop to 5th for some acceleration, and 4th to go anywhere with decent speed. The looks are great, but I just ordered my Tuner from 5Star and hope I recoup some of my power and MPG. Anyone else have a similar experience? Maybe the tires are too much? Am I going to destroy my tranny running these tires? I didnt think I went too big so I am just shocked and disappointed. The tire is VERY quiet on highway and street and although looks like an aggressive MT, it rides like an AT. I am also running them at 35 PSI. Maybe I should increase the PSI to 40-45 ?

I run them in a 275/70/18. I did not experience any noticeable drop in mpg. (I run mine at 40 psi, also have the 5.0) I run a MPT 87 perf tune. Don't forget, you are running a heavier tire than before in addition to a wider tire. Wider tire, larger contact patch, more friction.... Maybe the tune will help you, I get better mpg with my perf tune than I get with my stock tune.

I had these on my last truck (03 silverado 2500hd) and loved them. Awesome in the snow and off road. I wanted to get them for my f150 but I dont want to go up to e rated tires. The whole reason I downsized was for a better ride quality.
Bump up the psi, that will help your mpg....but at the expense of comfort. The higher the psi, the worse the ride but you will get better economy. So, you have to look at what you want more.

i ran these on my last 4wd, when they hit about 25k miles they were horrible in the rain. like driving on ice, i rotated them every 4-5k miles criss crossing them. got real noisey also, they did do great in the mud down south. probably would of gone 50-60k miles but i sold them. i am leaning toward the Cooper AT3, don't need that aggressive tire anymore.

Nice looking tire. I paid about the same for my 275/70-18 BFG. When it comes to MPG, you went wrong in your purchases.
1. You bought a truck
2. You slapped on bigger tires
3. You bought E-rated tires
You gotta pay to play brother.

I have around 5000 miles on mine. Other than wishing they were lighter of course, they've been great. But they are lighter than the big MTs that are popular. And they cost a lot less. We'll see how well they perform in winter.
I get 17mpgs with them and a tune.
They do drop to 5th for some acceleration or up a hill. 4th is rare. But I'm ok 3.55 gears.

I am in Southern California, so we dont really worry about winter anything around here. Im going to bump the PSI up right away and see if i experience a difference. Thanks for all the replies. Still everything very positive about the tires. Just surprised having 3.73 gears with this huge power loss
