Code P0012
Anyone run into this with their 09+ truck? Check engine light been on a little while and I finally got around to using my SCT X4 to see what it was.
Cam shift timing over retarded.

Haven't noticed anything different with my truck though. 2013, 5.0, tuned, exhaust, tires, wheels for mods. 21k miles.
Going to see if I can get time with the dealer tomorrow or Tuesday.

Truck is at dealer for the 4th time on this.
They replaced a sensor the 3rd time I believe. Light came back on within a week. My guy is going to try a little more before they will want me to reflash the PCM to stock. He believes Ford will make a stink about the tune soon though.
Ironically, I think the issue started shortly after I installed my exhaust....which wasn't retuned after. Research said it wasn't necessary since it isn't a major performance modification.
But I am now starting to wonder. I reached out to Stage3 to see if they think 5 Star can send me new tunes.

I assume your tune adjusts the timing to an extent. Any chance the timing adjustment is over retarded causing the sensor to indicate the code? If the issue goes away after reflashing to stock, obvious signs point to the tune.
How long was your tune installed before installing the exhaust? I highly doubt it had any effect.

Based on a quick look at my order emails of the tune and exhaust.....I say a few months between them tops. Like tune in June and exhaust in August?

Issue still persists. Now with a P0014 code in addition.
The last visit, dealer had me run an updated stock tune. Asked to do it for a few hundred miles. Their senior tech said he had never seen anything like this before.
So did about 400 and no issues. Put an UPDATED tune from Stage3/5* (after telling them what had been going on) and after about 1300 miles, the check engine light with these codes came back.
This would be the 5th time if I go in tomorrow. I really don't know what to expect now. And I have never been able to find any other 11+ trucks with this issues.

P0012 is over retarded timing bank 1 and P0014 Is over advanced timing bank 1.
Several causes that are identical for both codes include:
VCT unit to camshaft alignment
Camshaft timing incorrectly set
Continuous oil flow to the VCT piston chamber
Erratic camshaft position due to low oil pressure
Oil flow restriction in the oil passages or the VCT valve body
VCT solenoid valve stuck open
VCT circuit open
VCT circuit short to voltage
VCT circuit short to ground
VPWR circuit open
Camshaft advance mechanism binding (VCT unit)
Damaged VCT phaser
Damaged camshaft position (CMP) sensor
CMP sensor circuits open
CMP sensor circuits short to voltage
CMP sensor circuits short to ground
Radio frequency interference
Extensive and advanced diagnostics are required at this point to determine the root cause but logic tells me you probably have an issue with the tune. Before you waste any more of your or the dealers time, go back to the stock tune and drive it a while just to see.
Have you installed anything that might affect or produce the last possible cause in the list, eg: RFI? New lights, new radio, anything electronic, cell phone charger etc....
Did you use Motorcraft oil filters when changing oil?

Post#6 states 400 miles on fresh stock tune resulted in "no issues" followed by updated Stage3 tune with renewed thrown codes. Why not simply revert to stock tune and call it good? Seems to me, remaining drivetrain warranty on this truck is now in jeopardy from repeated trips to the dealer recorded. Is that performance tune really worth it???

This is one of the problems I was having with my 2013 5.0, same as you running a 5 star tune, got a P0014 code, took it to the dealer, they know I had a tune on it, said take the tune off and test, was good for over 11,000 miles then while stock got a P0014 and P0012,dealer looked at it a couple of times because these codes kept coming back, three more times before trade in. While stock I did have an aftermarket exhaust on it but wouldn't think that would be an issue.
Do you ever feel it miss right before the check engine light comes on? I could tell when mine was going to throw a code.

I think that it did it while merging onto the highway. Might be the second time it's done it at this particular situation and even the same ramp.
Not sure if I could feel anything before that though. I'm not confident in my mechanical intuition to identify or predict such things.
