Default Cigarette lighter as 12 volt source

The manual states the cigarette lighter socket should not be used as a 12 volt accessory point. Any comments? I could use two up front.

I would guess that its bc the lighter maybe fused at something greater than the phone chargers and acc that we plug into it are capable of handling and could start a fire. But as the previous poster said. Why not? That's all we had bf accessory ports and back in the day my phone charger never caught fire when plugged in the lighter port.

In taking apart my dashboard once, I noticed the circular change holder on the drivers side had wiring to it, opposite the passenger side 12v accessory source. You could use that instead of the lighter.

I agree with techrep. Also, the cigar lighter and the powerpoints are all fused at 20A (2010 at least) so there should be no difference in capacity/wiring etc.

By definition, a 20A circuit should have 12 guage wire for a continuous draw. Short bursts of 20A peaks, non sustained, can get away with 14-16 guage. I think the wiring to the lighter is very light, perhaps 16 if I recall. I use my lighter port for things like LED or strobe emergency beacons, cell chargers, small inverters (100W or less). I would not use that for a 200W or greater inverter, or anything that would draw more than 10A continuously.

What do you intent to run BLU4TJW dude?

The lighter is 16-gauge wire per the power diagram.

Let us remember that fuse are there to protect the wiring...not the appliance.

Answer is yes you can, but its a pain, at least for radar detectors. Unlike the 12v outlet on the dash its an always on deal. You have to remember to turn off whatever you put in there since its directly connected to the battery.
