Checking the trans fluid

Checking the trans fluid
OK stupid question here - my first Ford. I cannot for the life of me find the dipstick for the auto trans to check the fluid. 2009 5.4 4x4; anyone willing to take a photo of where the dipstick is?

There is a stick, but it is made to be checked by the dealer. The dip-stick is located under the truck on forward passenger side of the trans next to the catalytic converter (it is under what looks like a large tall hex head bolt). It should be checked with the trans completely up to operating temp with the engine running and after putting the trans in each gear for at least 5 seconds then put it in park. With the engine at normal idle and trans in park remove the trans fill plug/level indicator assembly. Seperate the dip-stick (fluid level indicator) from the plug, wipe the stick clean and reinstall just the stick back into the trans and pull out again to check level as marked on the stick.
Careful not to burn yourself - I use an oven mit - a long one if you have it.
Good luck......... or just have the dealer do it, it is a pain to do.

We've argued the semantics of this before - whether the service fluid level indicator under the truck qualifies as a dipstick. Ford says there is no dipstick and that the transmission fluid should be check by the dealer - hence the unfriendly location under the truck. See owner's manual page 395.

Ford recomends you use BP fuel too, but do you always do that?
A "fluid level indicator" shaped like a stick is a dip-stick!
