Default Check TSB version?

So, I'll admit I don't really know what I am talking about and I am sure I'll get three kinds of responses. 1 - You just drive different so that is the issue with mileage. 2 - Why don't you search you stupid idiot, the answers are out there. 3 - Something actually helpful. I am hoping for more of #3.

I had my truck in for service right around the 2000 mile mark. Nothing serious just an installation of the ford remote access cellular remote start. Prior to this service I was easily getting 17mpg city and 20 highway. I can also say that on my commute to work (which is the same today) I was getting 19mpg.

After this service (for the last 1200 miles, now at 3200) I get 14.5 city and 18 highway. While also getting 16.5 for my work commute.

How can I tell if they did something that caused this? I read here a lot about TSB updates that can cause increases and decreases in mpg performance. Any ideas? Should I contact the dealer? I honestly don't know much about cars, I am a computer guy. I love my truck but don't have any leg to stand on when it comes to arguing with a dealer.

  • normally any TSB (Technical Service Bulletin) related service would be indicated on the work order / receipt that you received.
    .
  • The service tech' more than likely disconnected the battery as part of the remote start installation. This action will reset the PCM.
    .
  • How are you determining MPG? Cipherin' | dash message center?
If you feel comfortable with the dealership that performed the service ... Ask 'em what's up.

Determining mpg with the dash computer. How long until it learns again?

Disconnecting the battery will reset the PCM? I was always curious about this. So, the truck would have to re-learn your driving style?

I would contact the service adviser manager and ask him about your concern. Eventhough, I read about guys getting 18mpg in city, I never got that. I am always about 14.5 in city. I do have longer bed and 3.15 gears. I don't know if that has anything to do with it. I do get pretty good mpg on highway, probably due to gears. Let us know what the advisor says if you ask him.

And you are right, this is crazy. That would take a long while.

I have a 5.5' bed with 3.73 gears.

The key evidence with me is my work commute. It was a game for me. Every day I would reset the mpg and try to get it a little bit better. So I paid close attention.

I was about (yesterday) to go on a 130 mile round trip run which was about 40% highway, 40% country roads (45-55 mph), and 20% city. Based on my recent experience I was expecting 16.5-17 mph. Before I left I opened the stock air intake because I was contemplating gotts mod. I removed the airflow sensor and gave it a little blow and removed the filter looked at it then replaced it. I did not do gotts mod. Round trip was 19.4 mph, not as good as some of you guys but way better than before. The sensor was not visibly dirty, but maybe it was?

Also today I got 19.1 mpg on my way to work.
