Calling all 4.6 owners
Firstly, sorry if there's a thread already on this, but the search on this new app is kinda sucky. Anyway, I just sold my truck and I'm looking into a 12th gen. I was pretty set on a 5.4 but I've found a few nice trucks with the 4.6. How are these 4.6's durability wise? How would a 09 or 10 4.6 4x4 supercrew compare power wise to the 99 (pre pi) 5.4 4x4 ext cab I just sold? Real world mpgs? Thanks in advanced.

I went through the exact same situation a bit over a year ago! Sold my 99 5.4 and bought a 2010 4.6. Both supercabs with the 6.5 ft box. I was super skeptical about the 4.6 but once I drove it a couple times I didn't look back. It's pretty hard to tell the difference between engines unless maybe you tow a lot. I get around 15 mpg's with a level and raptor wheels and tires.

sweet thanks good to hear I noticed the 4.6 had 30 more hp and 30 less tq compared to the older 5.4 so in theory it should have more top end just won't have as much off the line but I plan on a programmer so that should help with that

There are 2 4.6's. The 2v, and the 3v. I have the 2v which everyone on here says sucks. Contrary to that belief I've never had an issue. I've moved across the country with a fully loaded trailer with no issue. And I get about 16.5-17 mpg's on the reg. 19-20 if I use non ethanol gas.

4.6 3 valve is an incredible engine. Throttle response is instantaneous, 22.6 on highway hand calculated, and the 6 speed keeps the engine in the power range at all times. 1600 rpms at 70 mph. ( 3.30 rear end). These motors have a reputation for being extremely durable and when maintained well, will be within factory tolerances at 500k miles. ... And the 2009-'10 have a free flowing exhaust and intake resulting in a great exhaust note. I'm very glad I bought the 4.6. In general, the 5.4 has a few more issues than the 4.6

There is a 4.6 2v that has the 4 speed transmission and the 4.6 3v with a six speed transmission. The 2v is 248hp and the 3v is 292hp. Both good engines, I have the 4.6 3v and love it. The six speed trans is really nice.
